Had a chance to fly one. Loved the looks but didn't care for how it flew. It had no interest in holding a trim speed. Trim level, push nose down and let the speed build, then release the stick. the nose stayed pointing at terra firma. I was sad but not shocked when it cratered near KWVI.

I thought Cirrus had bought back all the kits for that deathtrap.

My first job at Cirrus was providing builder support for the VK-30 kitplanes. The looks were stellar - nothing like it. The performance was amazing. The cabin was fantastic. It was quite an honor to be working in and around that airplane at the time. I think the company was somewhere around 30 people total then.

The longer I was there, the more problems with the kit I came to find out about. It was more problem ridden than you can EVER imagine. The stall on the airplane was the most horrific you can ever believe. If you watch the tuft testing of the stall, it's a text book example of the absolute worst wing stall characteristics you would ever want. That was only the tip of the iceberg of the problems that airplane had.

It's not reflective at all of the SR20/SR22 but a good example of how the kit industry can produce sexy, high performance aircraft that are simply unsafe and deadly.

I flew in one before I knew about all the problems - I loved it. You could never get me in one again. Period.
