Yeah--Somewhere I have the book and I think the video--
It's the most sickening story I've ever heard--what a bummer and caused by such
a minor thing--the gd aux power unit!!! After a monumental struggle to get her
out of there!!!

Just missed it, what happened?
When I was 19 and had just gotten my pilots license, I had the pleasure of taking a B29 pilot flying in my warrior. He had flown bombing missions over Japan out of Saipan. His name was Tuck Hargrave, I'll never forget it. What an honor it was for me.

A team spent 3 years rebuilding a B-29 (that crashed landed?), new engines and feathers, in the freezing cold.

They got the engines running and all ready for first flight.

Run up....

Start to taxi in the snow drifts...

FIRE!

Their Aux Power Unit caught on fire and burned the bird to scrap condition...

I did like how the leader said, This was my game, I'd do it over again!

That's my kinda guy!

I would kill myself... That aircraft was bouncing all over the place. How about slowing it down? There are only a few hundred thousand parts that can come loose. At the end he says, he would do it again. Ok, now find another B29... oh wait.

I remember watching this years ago, and I think one of the guys actually died in the process of rebuilding this airplane. I think he just wore himself down and got sick. Anybody recall the details?

Yeah--don't recall his name--but the expert mech they had along--exhausted
himself and they flew him out before leaving for the winter--died in the hospital
I think, was not there for the next spring try to fly it out which ended with the fire!!
Certainly added to the tragedy!!

They are quite lucky that it all happened on the ground. I just saw this on PBS and could not believe what I saw. All that work.

That leader is no other than Darryl Greenamyer who once owned a V-tail Bonanza with Duke engine in it. That is 380 hp in a V-tail Bonanza! :bugeye:

:bugeye:

That V-Tail must have been a maintenance hog!

I'll bet that plane climbed 730+fpm faster than a normal V-Tail @ GW!
