Only because we have made squeezing so expensive. That said, I think moving away from the union in Seattle will be seen as worth the squeeze and will drive the move to a non 737 platform.

Remember that great contract the Teamsters got out of UPS a couple years ago? 48,000 losing their jobs now, and more to come. Same will happen at Boeing. It always does, it just takes time.

this one time I looked to see what
the 3rd smartest guy in the room had to retort.

I'm typing this slow because I'm sure you don't read very fast.



Wrong, as usual.

We know every subsonic airfoil shape there is.
The possibile .00001% of efficiency that might be left is inconsequential.
And I'm sure being the rocket scientist that you are,
the lightweight materials are all known.

Area rule?
Wetted area?

We know it inside and out.

Discovering what efficiency is left is financially prohibitive.


Now, back to my Ignore List with you.

Engines continue to evolve and that might drive airframe changes to accommodate larger diameter fans. Light strong materials have been known a long time, but prices can move, making lighter materials more competitive, allowing longer more efficient wings.

Structural codes and manufacturing have improved, making it possible to build an airframe that is lighter because it isn't stronger than it needs to be.

None of those is going to be a huge win, but its a very competitive market. Whether Boeing can recoup the capital required to build a new plane is unclear, but I think right not Airbus is in a winning position, and I expect to see Chinese airliners on the international market in the next 10 years.

I slightly disagree, the A320 has a slightly wider cabin, allowing a little more elbow room in the typical 3-3 economy seating. It was the first thing I noticed on my first trip in an Airbus.

I think it had a lot more to do with the fact that the 737 was certified in the 1960's and is cheaper to manufacture because of the standards that were in place then.

They had a replacement, the 757, but they stuck with the 737 because it was cheaper to produce and therefore more profitable.

A320 series is wider, and the cabin seats are an inch wider as well plus the aisle is slightly wider. Plus, the ceiling is slightly taller. And you can have the sideways bins and a carry-on for everybody and still be able to get under the bin when the door is open on the NEO airplanes.
And as a crew member on both, when the A320 trip finishes, you're less tired because the cockpit is a bit quieter and more roomy, plus the air-conditioning actually works in the summer. Less workload trying to game the airplane to get it to do what you want instead of just setting the altitude and pushing.
We have a 737 MAX replacement, it's called the A321 NEO and the A321 NEO XLR. The XLR also replaces the 757-200, less seats, but the real 4700 mile range. It burns half a ton less fuel per hour. For these medium to high-yield long, thin routes, the thing prints money.

Not for SWA. Like Emirates, SWA drives many design changes and places big orders. The 737NG was only supposed to be a stop-gap airplane between the classic and a new - clean sheet design. SWA came along and ordered the 737NG by the thousands, and they still wanted the dreaded 6-pack efis display w no auto throttles, yep that's what they got.

Boeing is in the business to sell airplanes and it's what the customer wanted. Airline pilots love to complain on what an airplane doesn't have but they don't pay the bills.


Those pesky airline pilots must be people. All they do is complain.

Boeing did it because it offered the most ROI.

We know most of what we're going to know about subsonic jetliners.

Pete - Airframers, beside specifying the width of the fuselage, have little to do with seat comfort and arrangements: The airlines will not only specify, but also procure independently their own seats in most cases. As such, seat comfort features, finish and seat pitch (legroom) are left to them.
