Matt I spoke with Columbia/blackhawk just a few months ago about their stc to put 750’s in my 501 and they said my plane was eligible.

The Williams 501’s climb like a beast. Today out of Van Nuys we were climbing out in a turn IMC at almost 5000fpm and at 250 knots. It just kept pulling and climbing. Crazy. Mike Attachment: IMG_6311.png Attachment: IMG_6310.png

I was excited to post this 350 kts at 37k feet after rigging both FCUs, but I'm clearly outdone by your supercharged 501. So I'll counter with a question instead. Where is your safety pilot?

I took 10 adults, and all our baggage, to Beef Island from north Texas with one stop in FLL. We were still legal, and had 5,100# out of the possible 5,400#. I could have never done this trip in a V or an Ultra. Climbed straight to FL430 with a fuel burn of 1,000pph in cruise.

I think the point was that instead of being able to take 10 people and hold 5100 pounds, it would be a better design to be able to take another 1500 pounds of fuel and only hold 1 person. Then you can start offloading fuel for people as needed. "Full fuel payload" is a bit of a red herring in that while it's great a plane can have a high number, the best design would have the plane carry more fuel instead.

Yes and I kept pulling power levers a little and thinking the speed would bleed off as we climbed but it didn’t. I was pretty much right at 250 (it’s possible i went slightly over but never got the overspend buzzer which is just over 260) and kept looking at the climb rate thinking what the hell…. it’s climbing like crazy and I am about to bust my speed. Wild.
One of the things with the williams that I have not got used to is the throttle don’t do much just off the stops down to about 70% physical position. You go full power then pull back slightly and the ECU goes to MCT. The throttle area is pretty wide for MCT. So I think when I was pulling back I wasn’t out of the MCT range and it might not have been pulling power and much as it felt. But normally it slows down in a turning climb. I also kept moving my trim wheel to increase climb but the rate kind of worried me as it looked like 5000fpm
It’s crazy how all these things are going on at once and your brain is taking it all in. Especially when things are different than normal in IMC climb. In retrospect I should have slowed way down but was trying to be patient and let it do what it normally does. My son was up front and confirming what I was seeing on the climb.
I was pretty light as we were just going to St George and only had my son with me.
I wish I had a video of us popping out of the cloud layer in a climbing turn at that speed. was wild. Felt like Mavrick

Username Protected wrote: Are you on an engine program Mike? I assumed everyone with Williams was but I talked to a guy at the FBO one time who said he wasn't. Yea I am and not really happy about it. Haha. It’s gone up 48% in 3 years. When I got the plane I did all these calculations for trip cost including engine program. That was before they decided to take advantage of us program guys. Now I just look at program cost as an annual fixed cost like insurance or hangar. I can change the way I look at things to justify anything. LOL. I did have a fod event that they covered that would have cost me $45k. So that was nice. And I do like the peace of mind that I won’t have a bad $500k day. I can’t afford that but can afford to get water tortured drip by drip. Mike
