I can't say for certain about the raptor, but my plane can be on a trailer in about 4 hours. Now that's a trailer that has brackets that tilt the plane so it doesn't require any wide load placards or permits.

None of us know exactly why the test pilots declined to fly. But I don't think not being able to do a runway hop is the primary reason.

I'm guessing the reason is that there's simply no suitable off-airport landing area.

It really is. This belongs to the guy who transports planes for Velocity. Before he built this, it took a bit longer to get the plane on the trailer.

Pretty solid plan. He got a lot of valuable testing out of his home drone while having the convenience of his own hangar there.

I do hope he comes up with some better, permanent solutions for the uhhhhmmm I'm gonna call them "quick fixes" that have caused a lot of the contention on this thread.

This shows the airports with runways greater than 8000 feet in the general vicinity of Peter’s airport. He indicated that the airport wasn’t too far away but I don’t think he mentioned which airport. His home base is near KMGE.

Would assume it’s for the case where there is not enough altitude to return to the airport. You want clear spaces at end of runway...

I would spend the money to bring it to a dry lake.
Cheaper than 6 months in a hospital...
Giant dry lake, lots of room to make subtle turns in ground effect to debug the small things.
Then when all is good, start climbing. But if things go wrong, land anywhere
In a normal airport, once you are in ground effect, you are committed, no turning back. Even in a 8' feet runway, you will be eating that distance really fast, no time to make some assessments about the worthiness of this beast.

In a heavy, underpowered airplane with a very high wing loading and corresponding high liftoff speed, you need a REALLY long runway in order to stay within gliding distance during takeoff and climb. Suitable off airport landing zones off the departure end are a darn good idea for the first few flights at a minimum.

The taxi tests have shown the take-off ground run is twice as long as expected.
5000 feet should have been adequate, but Peter has been taking all 5000 feet to just accelerate/stop.
There is no margin.

The lack of power is really going to be an issue. I assume he is light on fuel and only one passenger and it still take way longer to take off than most planes.


He really needs a expert to come and tune that engine. I would not trust his tune giving that he was learning as he went. I have tuned a lot of custom Efi engines and when I think back to my early tunes they were a joke. Haha.
