Does the supplier pump directly into the truck? Who is the supplier? Jet-a or 100LL?

I have neighbors that have them. 500-1000 gal. JetA. Big semi fills them up.

We have one at our Seaplane Base privately owned and only a few of us have access to it and on the honor system. Large Tanker fills it when making its rounds of the airports in the area. They will not come out just to give us 1,000 gallons, but if they have deliveries totaling around 6,000 gallons or so they will top us off.

I used to run a small airport. Skydiving operations so we used a lot of fuel.

Fuel is delivered. But they charge a fixed price for the delivery truck and separately for the fuel. You will pay a lot for fuel unless you can take 7000 gallons or close to it.

Another alternative is to get a trailer made that you can drive to another airport. The sweet spot there is less than 200 gallons. Above that and insurance and licensing issues get difficult.

You can buy used fuel trucks. Aluminum doesn’t rust. Obviously rust is bad. You have to learn about filters and daily testing.

For a jet A, an old oil truck will do. Still needs to be cleaned out. Buy new hoses and filtering.

For 100LL, you need a truck that was used for gasoline. Harder to find.

Licensing a big fuel truck and insuring it for road use is a problem. But helicopter outfits do it.

Interesting at KSGJ, I often find the FBO fuel truck at the self serve. It can be a pain as they take several hundred gallons at once. Magically the fuel comes out of self serve at $4.19 and becomes $6.25 courtesy of Atlantic. Also I am not sure if they are also getting a volume discount.

I’m thinking more of jet-a and a 2000 gallon truck. I remember us paying $1.75 a gallon about 3 years ago.

A friend (BT member) has several.
At one location it’s Nadia at Mercury Fuel i think.

He has enough capacity to take full loads, Truck to truck.
Some municipalities don’t allow that.

All the trucks are basically the same, the only difference between a Jet and Av trucks is the filter micron requirement (1 for Jet, 5 for Av) and the nozzle You don’t need underwing (single point) for Av.

With my trucks (I have 7) the little ones often get switched from one fuel type to another as the season dictates. A product swap is nothing more than a flush and filter, placard change. I use 1 micron (Jet filter) for both products for simplicity.

When buying a truck make sure it has as aluminum, stainless, or epoxy lined steel tank. Rust is not your friend.

Don’t forget the additional cost of pollution insurance in case of a spill, it can be quite expensive. For 5 million mine is around 40k/yr for 300k of storage. Unless you use a lot of fuel you are probably better off sitting down with your local vendor and negotiating a price. Pre-paying for a chunk of fuel up front will often get you better prices. I have a few customers that will pay 25-50k up front when they have a big demand coming up, in return they get a good rate. Works for both of us.

I will have to check with Fil, who handles the ordering of our Seaplane Base fuel. I do know it comes from Vermont which is not far over the New York State line. We used to also get alcohol free auto gas that way too, but then New York eased up on the required ethanol upstate.

I have owned both a jet fuel and a 100LL truck. Suppliers came to my farm (4KS1) to fill them. I had to drive them down to the edge of my property as the delivery trucks couldn’t make the turn. This was back in the late 90’s. Jet A was $1. I built special parking pads that had retaining curb in the event of a spill. If the fuel leaks in to the ground you have a potential hazmat situation that could cost big $.

Also important to have a fuel truck repair person in your contacts.

6000 is a typical "transport" load.

One problem is that with fuel prices fluctuating, you can get stuck with a tank full of fuel at the highest price. At my home airport N72 we have a 4,000 gallon fuel farm, but not that many people use much fuel there. Right now it is $5.35 a gallon, which is not so bad, but when you could get it at other local, larger airports for $4.10, our sales went down that much more and by the time we were low enough to get more, the price had gone back up again.
