I fly Atlanta to Miami faster VFR than IFR. VFR with flight following?

Matt Why are all the jets always in line waiting for IFR release on bright, sunny days?

Sometimes you can't get your IFR clearance in the first few minutes of the flight and you have to level off maintaining VFR, looking for traffic, etc. Also, if there's traffic descending into your area at a high rate and you're climbing at a high rate, things can get exciting in a hurry. An IFR departure will keep you clear. It depends on where the departure airport is located to determine the risk of picking up a clearance after takeoff. Furthermore, what if you get an amended clearance? You're in a busy phase of flight, and copying a new clearance and entering it into the FMS isn't the ideal thing to being doing at that point. It's easier to do that while you're still on the ground.

Ha. Yeah, it's really hard. How did any of us survive getting a PPL?

During the controller strike, my exchief pilot got frustrated coming out of New Orleans, I think from the Super Bowl game. Everyone is waiting for their clearance so he blasts off in our FJ900 and asks for a clearance climbing through 280. Somehow he got away with it.

You wouldn't get away with that in today's system. But, you provide a good example of my point. Sometimes you just can't get cleared as soon as you want.

Yeah, I have found even with flight following, Florida wants to tell you what to do.

I've just never been a fan of flying around in turbine aircraft not talking to people. All it takes is busting one MOA or TFR... lose your license for six months... or worse.

They have this really cool thing called the internet nowadays. It has pictures that show you where all the TFRs are. Also have on board satellite with real time TFR and weather information. I've flown this way for 10 years. Never busted a TFR. Talking to ATC is fine but it's a false sense of security. They're sitting in a chair looking at a monitor. You still gotta be on top of things. Fly enough in the Caribbean and you learn to have your head on a swivel.
