Just got my RVSM approval. It took me 3 days. I begged the guy (extremely politely) to have it done prior to tomorrow and he made it happen. I just saved a metric ton on fuel for Christmas!

Good job. That said the RVSM LOA is a lot of bureaucratic nonsense. Bwthdik.

Which, oddly enough, they plan to do away with.

This proposal would revise the FAA's requirements for application to operate in RVSM airspace. The proposal would eliminate the requirement for operators to apply for an RVSM authorization when their aircraft are equipped with qualified ADS-B Out systems and meet specific altitude keeping equipment requirements for operations in RVSM airspace. This proposal recognizes the enhancements in aircraft monitoring resulting from the use of ADS-B Out systems and responds to requests to eliminate the burden and expense of the current RVSM application process for operators of aircraft equipped with qualified ADS-B Out systems.

What an incredibly rational thing that would be, let's monitor RVSM compliance in real time using ADS-B, then we can let basically anyone up there and check they conform. We can also check previously allowed planes for faults, too!

I sure hope this goes through.

Mike C.

Great trip out west! I made 2 stops with 100kt+ headwinds. I guess this vfr for a while thing didn't last too long as I shot 1 ils to minimums and 1 gps approach breaking out pretty high. Self serve at 2.80 freezing to death in Texas and getting pelted with mini hail pellets while fueling; fun. Plane trued out at 340 to 350 today as it was very hot. Dme and gyro worked perfectly as did all the rest of the systems; absolutely nothing broke or didn't work! I washed her after landing. These are really neat jets and what a privilege to own it.

Last photo is of Klingon anti fart spray. Klingon farts are very dangerous and I found this spray that was left for me works pretty well,

If you happen to stop by a shop with the equipment to test the antenna I would do that. If the problem is not there then Duncan overhaul or exchange. Couple a tanks of gas that little box is.

This is more a $300 problem, not a Duncan problem. I doubt it's the indicator or antenna. I'll wait for one of these boxes to pop up at my price point. These radome mounted boxes seem to live a tough cold life.

It's usually one or both of the antennas. They get corrosion internal and then you get crosstalk between them at altitude

I think you nailed the issue. Are the antennas the flat ones on the bottom? So there are 2 of them? I see this called a radar altimeter and also a radio altimeter; which is the correct term for this instrument? Works great near the ground but up high you have to pull the breaker or the needle starts swinging...annoying. The floorboards will definitely need to come out to get to them if the antennas are where I think they are at.

Back in the day, my dad had a Collins ALT-50 in his Baron. Worked great for the 15 years he had the plane - don't recall it ever needing repair. Note: airplane was always in a dry So Cal hangar.

Can anyone identify if this a collins or a sperry product ?

Manual seems to indicate a Sperry AA-215.

2 identical antennas, 1 transmits the other receives. Radio and radar altimeter terms are correct
