Which, oddly enough, they plan to do away with. https://www.federalregister.gov/documen ... d-verticalThis proposal would revise the FAA's requirements for application to operate in RVSM airspace. The proposal would eliminate the requirement for operators to apply for an RVSM authorization when their aircraft are equipped with qualified ADS-B Out systems and meet specific altitude keeping equipment requirements for operations in RVSM airspace. This proposal recognizes the enhancements in aircraft monitoring resulting from the use of ADS-B Out systems and responds to requests to eliminate the burden and expense of the current RVSM application process for operators of aircraft equipped with qualified ADS-B Out systems. What an incredibly rational thing that would be, let's monitor RVSM compliance in real time using ADS-B, then we can let basically anyone up there and check they conform. We can also check previously allowed planes for faults, too! I sure hope this goes through. Mike C.

If you happen to stop by a shop with the equipment to test the antenna I would do that. If the problem is not there then Duncan overhaul or exchange. Couple a tanks of gas that little box is.

These radome mounted boxes seem to live a tough cold life. http://www.flyingcolorsairparts.com/10737It's usually one or both of the antennas. They get corrosion internal and then you get crosstalk between them at altitude

I think you nailed the issue. Are the antennas the flat ones on the bottom? So there are 2 of them? I see this called a radar altimeter and also a radio altimeter; which is the correct term for this instrument? Works great near the ground but up high you have to pull the breaker or the needle starts swinging...annoying. The floorboards will definitely need to come out to get to them if the antennas are where I think they are at.

I think either is correct but Collins called their products Radio Altimeters Back in the day, my dad had a Collins ALT-50 in his Baron. Worked great for the 15 years he had the plane - don't recall it ever needing repair. Note: airplane was always in a dry So Cal hangar.

2 identical antennas, 1 transmits the other receives. Radio and radar altimeter terms are correct
