The class teacher is a freshly minted private pilot getting a lot of time in one of our mentor's RV-12. We've a student who is working toward his private. The plan is for these two to fly the class project to Oshkosh this year.

This is our first build (#16 in the nest) and was informed that a two year completed airplane is perfectly acceptable. It's not so much about completing the project as it is for training students on processes. This airplane will be available for student training toward their private next year as we start a new project donated by Eagle's Nest: http://www.eaglesnestprojects.org/Talk to Ernie Butcher, he has several schools building his airplanes. The key is to find good and faithful mentors who work with the kids showing them the way. It's their project and the mentor should instruct on processes and guide the sequence. We do a lot of kit building so the kids don't have to go on a parts hunt. The plans are pretty good and well written and illustrated.

That's a very cool program - I took an Aircraft Construction class in HS back in the (gulp) 70's; we built a VolksPlane that my teacher actually flew when done. Our autoshop students built up a VW engine. My favorite memory was when our teacher mounted the engine on a wood stand, hooked up controls, fuel and a prop and ran it up in our workshop!
Quite a few students went on to pursue aviation in one form or another - it's a great way to fire kids up.

Very impressive. Congrats. What a great way to inspire the next generation of flyers & mechanics.
