Nope don't believe it! That Baron is way more efficient than that. At least that's what I have to tell myself.

At night it can be a little nervous flying with a red hot glow visible through the cowl openings. Wait to you uncowl her at night and do an engine run up and see the entire exhaust system glowing red! Username Protected wrote: Stockton, investing in Kalifornia now?? What is that photo? Maybe...
Yup It's the auxiliary visual EGT gauge for the inboard cylinders.

She climbs...
Cruise climb gave 900fpm all the way to 17,500 on 75% power with 100OAT on the ground and 1,400lbs payload.
In cruise at 17,500, it was well LOP at 15.1/side and gave 183 increasing to 186ktas as weight burned off for a 3 hour flight.
The plane needs Gamis and both #6 cylinders are CHT limiting the power setting due to folds in the baffling. I expect after a tweak in the timing, Gamis, and baffling trimming I will be able to close the cowl flaps and get 190ktas on 15/side at 17,500.
For as large as this plane is, I am really surprised at its efficiency. Lots of wing helps up high.
After 15 hours, I've decided she is a keeper and will suit my mission better than my Baron.

It held 4,000' on one..... With the other prop windmilling throttle closed and max RPM.
I screwed up today on a go-around on the last maneuver of our training. I pitched up, powered up, got the flaps up...climbed out 1,100 fpm - got back to downwind and realized I had left the gear down. Doh.... (I guess I should have realized we were dragging butt climbing out) :D
OEI with no thrust setting gave me about 400fpm through 3,000' with 1,400lb payload 100dF OAT. I think it would have been better if I fine tuned it, but I was happy with that and elected to just climb on two to 17,500.
As for the controls, the airplane is nose heavy without passengers and needs a lot of up trim for landing - no bob weight like the Bo.
Beech controls are much smoother in the air and on the ground. The elevator is stiff and fine adjustments are tough. We did maneuvers today and it was a little annoying trying to adjust altitude 20' during steep turns when the yoke isn't able to smoothly make small adjustments.
She flies slow with the VGs. Stalls are benign, even at 45 degree bank angle. Approaches are very easy. It feels like you are flying a sim. It just rides the rails.
This is a good bird if you need the room. I don't know how the regular 310 Navajos compare performance wise. My instructor was surprised by the takeoff performance. Full of gas with both of us we were 1,700fpm and 135kias.
Climb performance is similar to the 421 down low and I give the Panther the edge up high. The 421 is a more elegant ride with pressure and a few more systems. The view from the Navajo is much better for passengers and the visibility is better for the pilots.
I'll compare more later...
The Navajo clears my hangar by 4.5" on either wingtip. We put 3.5" aluminum angle down like a track for the main gear. Works great and now I don't have to worry. Like a glove.
Here is a pic next to a jet prop...

Well it sure sounds like a great airplane! I seriously think I can get by for a few more years with the Baron. But this is deffinately going on the future upgrade list!
Jesse thanks for all the details of your experience. This is awesome!
