I have a baron with the older GAAB non-adjustable fuel caps. The 'over-center' part of the 'lock-down' tab has warn some and is allowing the 'tab' to rise slightly after fully closing the cap. This slight loosening allows fuel to siphon when in flight. Is this part of the cap assembly purchasable? Or is there an approved repair? It seems it's just aluminum. I was thinking to add a little material with a tig process and sand it the right shape again. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure it is the same cap, but when I replaced the "O" rings in my caps (S35), they tightened up considerably. $9 per cap from Performance Aero.

About a week ago I made a post about getting rid of the Gabb fuel caps. I changed over to Shaw caps. Every once in a while you can find them on Ebay,
I had several bad experiences with the Gabb such a losing a great deal of fuel several times and water getting in the tank.
Gabbs never have a good over center feeling like the Shaw and the Shaw is adjustable. I replaced the o rings to no avail.
Your idea of tig welding the tab and reshaping may work, but it is still not adjustable. After so many bad things happening with the Gabbs I got rid of them

I tend to agree with you Charles. Thanks for the thought.

Agree.....first replace the o-rings (MS29513-339), about a buck fifty from Spruce. I've had some success removing the tab and filing the area where it contacts the cap so that it is more "square". This area often becomes too rounded from years of use. This will make the tab lay down flat but you have to be careful to remove as little material as possible. Another trick is to buy a stainless washer of the correct diameter, cut out the "wedge" so it matches the washer you're removing and install it.......sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know of a source for repair parts. I've got one overhauled Gabb and a pair of Shaw in the hangar. PM me if interested. Bob, BPPP Maintenance Team

I had my A&P do that filing trick to my Gabbs during annual. The right cap was fine but the left cap would stick up in the airflow, and finally, while it was at his shop it just plain wouldn't lock down anymore. He took it apart and filed a tiny little bit to get the edge to be more square. Worked like a charm.

My Deb is tied down outside at Fullerton, CA and we've had double our normal rainfall this year. No water intrusions thus far.

Worth a shot.

Eric,

Did he just file it more square? Or did he add some material and then file it square?
