I am looking at a 1967 V35 with a 1700 engine and trying to calculate a purchase price. What is the approximate cost of a major O/H?

Depends who does the overhaul.

If you want a boutique Powermaster's engine its probably around 40-45AMU.

A field overhaul by an average shop is probably 30AMU.

Go to this sight for factory reman prices. You can also call for overhaul price. Factor in install and shipping cost.

Hi Roger,

Here is an option that I have experience with

http://www.devineair.com/dai.htm

Their price list claims about a $15K overhaul on an IO520, assuming you have a VAR crank.

My left IO470L is a Devine engine and has about 1000 hours on it and has not given me any difficulties since overhaul and install in 2004. For personal & employer promotion reasons at the time I put Superior Millennium Standard cast cylinders on it in late 2006, there was nothing wrong with the TCM cylinders I removed and the Superior Millenniums (no AD versions) are doing well to date.

I suggest everyone do their proper due dilligence on a project of this magnitude, but this seems to be clear evidence that our engine overhaul options do not have to be a $30K endeavor. :pullhair:

BWTHDIK????

PS: Devine lists their prices include R&R of the engine in your airplane. WOW!

Mike

Any other experiences with Devine?...that price is 10K cheaper than most competitors...interesting find Mike.

I'm just one data point Jeff.

PS: the broker that sold me my plane sourced the engine prior to my offer on it so I did not have a say in the selection or any due diligence of the shop.

But it sure would have this CSOB taking a closer look. I have all the yellow tags for case, crank and rod work that Devine did on my IO470L and heaven knows what other tags are in there.

So, I wonder what cost for a new crank (mine is an Airmelt)?

The 5 year warranty looks pretty darn compelling from Western Skyways. Note that TCM has an added core bonus right now of $1500 for new or $750 for rebuilt if your engine is first run. It puts the price of a factory rebuilt (zero time logbook) around 28-29k, though WS seems to be including the accessories in that price too. My left engine has got some very light spalling on the lifters and cam lobes, so I'm going to be in the same boat shopping for an engine in the not too distant future. Anyone have recommendations on west coast shops?

Googled this :coffee:
Who Benefits from Airworthiness Directives? They also increased the crankshaft diameter slightly on their 520-series engines. ... requiring ultrasonic inspection of IO-520 and TSIO-520 crankshafts to detect ... New VAR crankshafts have list prices which vary from $6700 to $8200. .... New crankshafts for these engines cost between $4500 and $6500 apiece. ...

How do you know if you have a VAR crank?

Looking at their site, they do not mention OH of the fuel injection or accessories (starter, alternator, vac pump, fuel pump, governor, mags). I wonder what this would add to their price, plus new cylinders?

I thought the continental manual stipulated that the accessories also needed to overhauled in order to consider the engine 0 SMOH. Just like it calls out the items that must be replaced with new.

BTW, to the original poster, last year I bought a very clean '67 V35 for $55k. The airplane was perfect (so said PMC), except the engine was high time. It was at TBO when I bought it, but with 500hr cylinders. I simply replaced all the hoses, plugs & wires, and overhauled the starter adapter. Still purring strong with no need for overhaul in sight.

I just went through this on my F33A and my cost of doing this with local guys (Don George Engines and Orlando Propeller) was within a gnats ass of the numbers that Eric has quoted.
