 Post subject: Cessna 340 Engine Failure

My son flys a Beech 99 dropping skydivers and yesterday while preparing for the next load, heard an odd sound coming from a plane on takeoff. Looked up and saw a Cessna 340 struggling to maintain a minimal climb and nearly clipping tree tops for as long as he could see him. Fortunately the pilot made it back around to land safely. My son asked him what happened. Pilot was doing a touch n go landing and after applying power the boost on the right engine was surging from zero to over boosting. It is my understanding the pilot did not shut down the engine. He was the lone sole on board and said he was hanging on blue line and seconds away from closing the throttle on the good engine and going into the trees.

Would have expected better performance considering the light load and an engine producing partial power.

Wonder what Sevx is on a 340.

Vxse is 95 KIAS
Vyse is 100 KIAS
Vmca (if VG's) 72 KIAS or 82 KIAS w/o VG's

If he did not feather the engine and/or had the gear/flaps down, climb rate must have been anemic. Don't know the altitude but if it was light he should have gotten adequate performance on one engine. On the other hand, Touch and Go's? Hmmmmm

Drag effects of an engine producing partial power vs a feathered prop and secured engine?
