And on the purely subjective side of a hand mic and cabin speaker while I'm on home field, I love hearing those 470s. :D

So I can hear the engines and other generators of sounds through startup, taxi, and pre-departure checkout. If something sounds amiss, I can take whatever action is necessary, including aborting the flight. With my headset on, I may miss hearing something that I really need to hear...or not hear if that's the case. Been there once and missed hearing something that was telling me not to go. I don't want an instant replay.

Point two: A headset on the ground in bright sun and 100+ heat gets more than just uncomfortable within mere seconds.

First time I've ever seen anybody else express the same reasons I don't like to wear a headset before run-up is complete George.

My Dad always taught me that very few mechanical things break without any warning whatsoever if you're paying attention.

That's really been the nicest benefit I've found since I went to my in-ear set. Avoids the heat and sweat, but it also lets me leave one ear open and one monitoring and talking to ATIS, ground, etc. Really a nice perk for the in-ears if you ever decide to try one.

My ancient DC H10-40 has served me faithfully for years but I've been researching a replacement since not long after our acquiring the Baron. I've never given an in-ear set much of a thought but thanks to your experience Randy, I will look into the offerings on the market today.

I nearly always leave one ear uncovered far enough to hear the aircraft even in cruise unless the reception from ATC is weak, and only then will I cover both ears. On approach, the noise of the wind by the cabin has been my watchdog with the slightest change instantly getting my attention.
