I often fly out of Frankfurt. I have to agree with your comment; they do make even the 747-800's look small! Interestingly, they use a new call sign prefix. Instead of being a "Heavy" there are referred to as a "Super". The 747-800 was referred to as a Super during testing and we had to use 10 miles separation. The A380 had the same rules and is still called Super. In the FAA's continuing push to make wake turbulence separation as difficult as possible we now have 6 weight classes proposed. Small, Small plus, Large, B757, Heavy and Super. Right now only the A380 series and the Antonov 225 are in the Super category. This new system started in Memphis and is supposed to spread nationwide but I haven't heard anything about it lately at work. Here's a link to the memo: http://tinyurl.com/d3x535x
