Hey all: Perhaps Tom Johnson shouldn't read this...

Here's the question. Bill Hindi started me thinking on this with his Hitler rant. One of the lines in there was: "He doesn't even need to pee in an oil bottle any more...he can land anywhere he wants!" So, can I?

I don't think the FAR's forbid it (reckless and dangerous, I guess)...so what if I need to pee and I am flying over a huge field. Why shouldn't I just drag it (we are assuming it is far from a house) and assuming it is safe, go ahead and land...and whatever? I understand that if I warp the airplane, its on me, but for the rest...can anyone make a definitive statement?

Obviously the airplane can deal with it. I think I can deal with it. How will the local cops (in your personal experience...if any) deal with it?

Sadly, my N number is big, so I will probably be identified.

Jim

Exactly. And on my many trips back and forth twixt New Mexico and Alabama...don't think I haven't thought it. Oh yeah...that one I would drag and then wheel land and see how wet the tires get before slowing down.

I don't think there are any rules, if it it's not a sanctuary or prohibited area. We did have some local guys get in a little trouble for landing on a city lake that was a no motorized vehicle area.
If it goes bad, just claim "mag trouble, seems ok now, see ya"
Private prop. may another story.

jim,
faster and easier to install relief tube. my first cub was a pa18a (w/belly fuel tank) that was a fish spotter with 8-10 of flight endurance and had a relief tube. at first we didn't know what is was but soon figured it out(no, nobody spoke into it).
unauthorized trespass might be the big issue but if you're in the boonies who's going to see you.
have fun, be safe.

LOL...yeah, you are probably right. However, I was really asking the question for my wife...and I'm not sure relief tubes work for the ladies.

On the trespass deal, yeah, a real factor. I figure I'll be far enough away that someone can't get to me before I am gone...and if they do turn me in...durn electronic ignition got wonky! Better now!!

Real men land out.

Glider pilots do this all the time. Occasionally, local law enforcement might stop by to check on you, but most of the time you meet the land owner and arrange for recovery.

Check local regs. Here in Montana all land below the high water mark is public. Landing on gravel bars is therefore legal.

Hi Jim,
I do exactly what you propose. Just land in a field, get out and pee. I usually don't even cut the engine. I did have one farm hand drive out on his ATV once, but he was fine with it. I don't see the big deal.

I handled an insurance claim where a guy flying a mapping survey in a Wilga couldn't hold it anymore so he landed on an innocuous-looking ridge to relieve himself. Unfortunately, he struck a hidden rock in the grass and tore the landing gear off. It was a remote area with no roads and a big storm was forecast, so we ended up hiring a helicopter to bring the aircraft back to civilization. $$$$$$$$

A 182 porpoised and tore off the nose gear last year during the Meadow Creek work party. Insurance company totaled the plane and had to get a helicopter to sling it out 10 miles to where they could take it apart and put it on a trailer. We figured about $5-7K for the helicopter.

It's just a precautionary landing due to high oil temperature. Just playing it safe officer.

I dropped into a lake that I was flying over on a cross country flight in an amphib. I took a piss then took back off and continued the flight. I can only imagine what the fisherman who was watching was thinking ...
