What a find! Camera sent in shows planes still in good condition. What is an original condition Spitfire like that worth?

I will be more than happy to be proven wrong, but I think it is a complete

Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, did you say there were 30 or 60?

Just send your money to some folks in Nigeria. They'll ship you a container with a complete Spit in it.

It would be a good scam wouldn't it?

Advertise to a bunch of wealthy aviation fanatics that there are these perfect spitfires. Gin up enthusiasm.

Then, when asked by some reporter the "finder" says that he will sell them and wll be taking non refundable deposits while he digs them out. Handily provides contact information.

Wealthy, over the moon, aviation buffs send the "finder" 100K deposits..... they figure they are smart because they jumped on this opportunity to own a piece of history. Nothing to lose.

Hope this isn't the case. I watched a couple of the news telecasts on this but have not seen the actual crates or planes. Just old historical footage of Spitfires.

Seems to actually be true, confirmed from multiple sources, although the Daily Mail story is inaccurate in at least one way - Spitfire Mk II's were the latest model during the Battle of Britain 5 years earlier. These were most likely Spitfire Mk. VIII (which was commonly used in Burma) or Mk. XIV (which was the latest model in the summer of 1945). The main visible difference is that both of these have "pointy" tails and wingtips, not the rounded ones of earlier models. The Mk. XIV was essentially a Mk. VIII with a more powerful Rolls Royce Griffon engine instead of the Merlin (the engine used on the P-51 Mustang) and a bubble canopy like the P-51D.

Yes, I'm a WW2 airplane geek

OK, so where are these photos taken thru the bore hole? I read another report that the finder had confirmed the crates presence using underground radar/x-ray. Prints? I really hope this is all true, but so far all we've got are words. Words are easy to manufacture.

Tom Gresham and I are going to have to meet face to face for a "showdown" to see who is the biggest cynic !!!

Tom, it's a challenge. I think I am. What say you?

We're not that far from each other and I'll bet a steak supper. Hell, I'll do that win or lose.

How long does it take to dig out some crates? Its starting to sound fishy.

The article is dated in April. If they haven't been dug out since, I'll bet they do not exist.

Sounds like they are just now heading there to start digging: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/01/06 ... p=HPBucket

Keep in mind that this is Burma (aka Myanmar). Likely not the easiest country to pop into and start digging around for buried treasure. Looks like the leader of the effort had to promise half of what they recover to the Burmese government.
