A diesel-electric hybrid Mooney (with a 4" cabin width plug) would be a great seller. A hybrid has 2 primary ways it saves fuel - energy recovery during braking, and running the combustion engine at more efficient throttle/rpm settings. Given that we effectively fly at constant and high power settings, a hybrid would offer little if anything at all.
It may offer a lot for trainers or low powered cruising planes which do not climb bery high. Basically many of our single engine aircraft are overpowered for cruise in order to have excess capacity for climbing. If you can cover climbing with minimal extra weight and then have a gas engine run at truly optimal settings you may actually build a better mousetrap.
At this point I do not think the technology or the knowledge is there to make the potential effficiency worth the cost (it will raise the price of the plane to much).

First in terms of Design. The Lancair Evolution meets or passes all those specs, except low cost. The Evolution burns JetA1, this is a piston. Not the same. However, the vertical fin looks just like the fin on the Travelair which of course is a big plus although no excactly a giant technological leap. PS! These guys receive a $40 million subsidize from the government. Didn't think that was legal?

The Evo has a gas version. not as fast or as quiet. But still very nice. That was the one I was making reference too.
