Howdy John - sorry haven't answered your PM..just been slack - was great to catch up with you in Echuca and I am most impressed you haven't mentioned my 'drinking trick' in this august place Last I looked there was a nice looking 1976 Supercub with good engine time remaining for sale in Melbourne for circa 65k...probably get it for 55k. Then there is the LSA registered Carbon Cub...awesome bit of kit...essentially a Super Cub with more oomph PIC sits in back of J3 anyway so maybe not an issue - unless its a CofG issue?

It's been a long time since I logged J3 time, but J3's are solo'ed from the rear seat anyway. It's no big deal flying solo from the rear seat, and with a passenger or rear ballast, as long as the weight and balance works, you can fly from the front seat. Go for it! The most fun flying I've ever had was in a CAP J3 or a 7AC Champ. Don't recall if it was here or another board where someone commented that flying a J3 was the only time he'd ever been chased by a dog and almost got caught.

As I was taxiing, a dog came out and ran alongside the A-1A Husky I was in. When I brought the power up for takeoff, he ran out in front of me and I couldn't see him. I didn't want to hit the dog (and I really didn't want the dog to hit the prop) so I pulled the power off. When I did that, he slowed up and dropped back alongside again. I kept rolling, I ran the power up again and the same thing happened. I figured I gotta be smarter than this dog, so on the third try (this is a really along runway for a Husky), I did a up/back/up with the throttle which got the dog out of step and I left him behind. I haven't been back to that strip since.
