The B36's I looked at were in the $300K range at the time. The conversion to IO550 and TAT was $107K. Figure avionics, paint, interior was another $100K+ and I was at $500K+ into a 15 to 20 year old discontinued airframe. Was it less than the G36 in up front cost? YES.

But what did I stand to lose when I went to sell?

All I'm saying is that I wouldn't dump over $500K into an old airplane with a 6 pack when I could get a new one with the latest and greatest for a little bit more. If your investment is under $500K than I think that it's probably a good move.

This seems like a good candidate but I don't know what they want for it. At least the avionics part is out of the way. Just paint, interior and engine with TAT.

Subtract 100AMUs. I like new things and would have really liked to start with a G36 but the numbers don't work the same way that they did in '08. So I'm thinking of it more as an adventure than a fully planned trip. I've got a pretty good idea where I'll end up, and I just hope to have fun getting there.

No let's talk avionics....

I really think the future of fancy panel mount stuff (especially retrofit) is not going to make it compared to handheld. I think you can get away with a WAAS 430 and the best autopilot you can install and do the rest with an Ipad. If I were retrofitting a Bo, I'd try to make the panel as sparse, utilitarian and minimalist as possible.

Interesting, Jason. I thought you would be in the glass panel group (consider you have a G1000 and flew a Cirrus before that).

Are you saying you'd stick with the six pack if that's what it had already?



I want an electronic 6 pack. Something that could take the place of all the instruments into one. Kinda like those digital backup instruments you see where it takes the place of 3 instruments in one. But it has to look good. I'm all about the look of the panel. I hate jumbled up panels with buttons everywhere.

If the panel mount stuff weren't so expensive and now that it's digital, so quick to change I'd say do it. But I think any panel mount stuff you install now will look goofy in just a few years and at the end of the day, not nearly as good as Foreflight or WingX on the Ipad.

You can easily dump $100K on avionics and at the end of the day, it's not that great. It's just great compared to what's in a plane right now. But not great compared to the integration and intuition of an IPhone. Know what I mean?

Well, Jason, you're not making it any easier for me to spend my money. Isn't that a violation of some BT code?

I agree that the interfaces are WAY behind the iPhone or Android, but I don't see them catching up anytime soon. The GTN 750 really is a dramatic improvement, interface-wise, over the 530W, but I'm afraid we'll need to wait another 13 years for the iPhone equivalent. Can't always be waiting for the next better thing or we'll never get the first thing done.

Well, that's why I say abandon the concept of a panel mount all together if you can. I haven't researched it enough to see how far you could take it in a airplane.

As for cars, my newest car has no head unit for the stereo system. I have all nav and audio piped through the IPhone. It's a really slick setup.

Wife and I just purchased a 1982 B36TC. Was flying S35 Bonanza and P Baron. Still do not have much time in the T-Bonanza. It is evident that flying the Beech POH numbers will shorten engine life as the engines DO NOT like heat. The prior owner of this aircraft flew 1400 TIT and 330-340 CHTs. No this engine is over TBO and has good compressions. The reasons the -UB does not last is Beech did not spend the money for intercoolers (which help a lot) as they did on the P Baron. One can certainly crank up the power to get somewhere 30-40 sooner and drop big wads of cash into the maintenance bucket or fly a little slower and enjoy the ride. Why not its a great airplane. If you really need to get somewhere fast, fly commercial. Average flight for me in this plane is 3-4 hrs and I need to stop. I will add an intercooler and get my -UB overhauled for $35k. Enjoy....

Welcome Bill. I'm new here too. I just got my B36TC and love it. I had similar plans (glass panel + 550TN) and had a hard time deciding bt the B36 and a G36. Good luck with your hunt for the right plane.
