I've seen several threads on winter baffles for our Beech products, and thought you guys would get a kick out of the setup on my old Cessna. Not only were the cowl openings reduced, but the engine air intake as well. She had a carbureted 470, you can see the extra opening on the passenger side for the oil cooler. I had a mechanic say that sometimes it's hard to get the carb rich enough in winter to make up for that cold dense winter air without a restrictor plate. It's almost hard to believe that the old girl could get enough air to run at all with that small circle of an opening. You can see the original rectangular opening around the circle. Quite a reduction, eh? It's been a lot of years since I owned her, about 23?, so I don't remember alot, but what I can tell you is that she ran just fine with those restrictions in our frozen tundra known for cheeseheads. brats and beer. Everything in the green, nice and cozy.

I had the same covers for the cowl inlets. Did not use anything over the air filter.

Arnie -

FWIW, I bought my Bo in Siren, WI in February. You guys do a special kind of cold up there. I mean, really. Taking a breath outside caused me to choke.

Of course, with that kind of density, I suspect our airplanes will take off vertically. ;)

Arnie,
I have the same kit with the C185. Tried it a few times but the engine runs too warm.
Now i just cover half of the oil cooler when it gets under -20C. :D

I was flying today in the Baron and it was climbing 2000 fpm@140 kts. :D
Just myself and 120 gls of fuel.
Then i checked and I had a density altitude of -3000 ft.
The joy of winter flying.

Here was my Husky winterization kit. Found it in the FAA-approved bin in my garage.
