Good reminder why we should use preflight check lists.  Helicopter taking off at Huntsville TX. [youtube]http://youtu.be/Yx840-RSxjc[/youtube] Something that could have taken seconds on the front end cost him more time in the long run. Also could have been ugly had something heavy come out if there was a subdivision below him.

We get enough of these crazy "coulda been a disaster" quotes from the ignorant media. Let's not perpetuate this within the aviator community. James

Nah, tongue in cheek James since there are no subdivisions around Huntsville airport. I don't think there is anything around the Huntsville airport  .
I doubt any disaster would have happened if cargo fell out, just some unlucky soul having a major headache no different then if a meteor struck them. Probably the same odds of getting hit in my eyes..
Purpose of bringing this out is that complacency can come to bite oneself. Thus me also saying a check list might (not will) prevent this from happening. Human nature still rules and oversight happens.
I don't even know if there is a outside preflight for a whirly bird, but these guys didn't appear to do any type of inspection, just hopped in and went. We were there 20 minutes before they took off. Now, I'm realistic, they could have done a preflight before I got there.
It's funny, in talking with another heli pilot, he was quick to write this error off as "in a rush" when I said he didn't check all doors. He thought one was open like a fixed wing and they had to land and mentioned he keeps them on or takes them off.
When I pointed out, yep, just like a Jeep Wrangler, doors on or doors off however, I do close the cargo door.
He was appalled that I actually caught this error on video.
