This is What Happens When a Fast Mooney overtakes and rearends a 172, you get a 1967 Aero Commander Darter 100. I didn't know this beast existed.

I actually saw one of these at an air show when I was about 12. Amazingly there is a wiki page about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aero_Commander_100

The aircraft started off as a Lark 100

I flew one of these at Houston Hobby in sept 1967 notes in my log book jogged my memory aircraft was nice flying had more power and ROC than c172 however was very noisy a lot of wind leakage and most all small parts were rough and seats and upholstery were pretty low quality. Honestly my opinion was it appeared to be made in Korea, or Mexico.

All the builders back then had the (I think, valid) concept that new pilots would stick with the brand. There were some pretty ugly trainers built - the Piper Traumahawk comes to mind.

Beech had a better idea, with the Musketeer, but it was a pricey trainer iirc.

Got some memories there...that's what I started my primary training in, at Executive Beech at IXD...back in the day.

Squirrely little thing...

After bad-mouthing all the cheap trainers of yore, I can't find any love for the new LSAs either.

Years ago I handled an insurance claim on a Darter that crashed into powerlines. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but we had to total the airplane. Usually I feel a bit sad whenever I have to declare an airplane a total loss because it is sort of like killing a beautiful bird. It takes me days to recover if it is a Bonanza or a Baron. But with an airplane that looks like the product of a drunken night of unprotected sex between a Mooney and a Cessna, and that is alternatively called a Darter and a Lark, it was a pleasure to put it out of its misery.

I said "The NEW LSAs" - Cubs, Ercoupes, and Aeroncas not included in that class. I might make an exception for the new Icon amphibian.

I concur with Paul. The new ICON Amphib is sharp looking. My guess is that its performance is less so, but you do have to give those folks an "A" for design.

We live on a river and it would be fun, to be sure.

For those of you unfamiliar, here's a link -

http://www.iconaircraft.com/

The bikini clad models shown with the aircraft likely cost extra.
