New member, just signed up earlier today! I've owned Beechcrafts for close to 25 years, upgrading along the way. 67 A23-24 10 years 68 V35A 10 years 92 F33A 5 years Been to several ABS conventions over the years, and numerous MBS events also, hoping to get to Buffalo this year also. My 1992 F33A is currently at Dick Pedersen's shop in NW Wisconsin awaiting the arrival of the new IO-550-B, Super Scimitar Prop, BDS Baffling, Exhaust, etc. Was getting close to TBO (1565 hrs), and had 3 cylinders going down, one was at 17 lbs and blowing by the exhaust valve, Dick also found a large crack in that cylinder. Just glad it hung together long enough to get to his hanger where he discovered the problems during the annual last week. I had already gathered up all the appropriate info and quotes a few weeks ago to do the upgrade later this winter, so we just moved up the timeline to now instead of wasting a few thousand dollars to bandaid the engine until then. Hoping to have her back in the air around mid July, if not, Pedersen may not make it to the tent in Oshkosh. How's that for putting preasure on your mechanic. Glad to be a member of Beech Talk, Greg Stratz Attachment: DSCN0592.JPG

Hi Greg, Welcome to Beech Talk! Sounds like you caught things just in time on that cracked cylinder. I spend a fair amount of time up in ATW, Appleton so we're almost neighbors Good Luck to you with your IO550 conversion and if you're ever just boring holes in the sky, let me know and you can stop by my hangar for refreshments if I'm around or come to the next brat fry that I have up there. Mike

Tom, I don't have a picture of the crack which we could only see with a bore scope. The crack was in the barrel, not at the top of the head. If it had propogated further around the barrel, most likely the head would have exited the plane through the right cowling (#3). This was an original TCM IO-520 cylinder from 1992 that had been topped about 800 hours ago around the year 2000. Greg

Mike Mike, I fly over the top of ATW whenever going north, especially when going up to Airtronics in Clintonville for Avionics work. Let me know when the Brats are going on, we'll try to make it. Unfortunately I don't partake in the suds, Olson & Bernstein will confirm that. I may just have to try to attend non the less. I may have the Michauds flying in from Ontario in their V35 to stay with us this year and I bet they would enjoy it. We'll stay in touch on that. Thanks for the invite, Greg

Username Protected wrote: Greg, did you happen to know Jerry Weaver in Fond du Lac? He's passed on, but I ask because he was the previous owner of my Bonanza in Kalamazoo. Very nice guy. He and Barb started the Mancino's on South Main Street after their businesses in Michigan started doing poorly.
After he got back on his feet in Fondy, he bought another V-tail and had it painted the same color as his first one. It is hard to believe that his first Bonanza, the one I now own, was his for 13 years.... and I have had it now for 15. I will always remember our conversation on the phone the night I bought it for his asking price, to avoid a bidding war with another interested party. Gil, I knew Jerry very well, can even remember shuttling him down and back from the paint shop in Watertown in my V35A. He really missed that V35, the S35 he bought was pretty nice once he fixed it up. It's still in Fond du Lac, though it was damaged in an off airport belly slide in Colorado many years ago by the new owners after Jerry sold it when his health started to fail him. You may know he purchased another S35 when he started feeling better, though not too soon after the cancer came back and not too soon after he was gone. I believe that plane was sold by the maintanence guy in Kalamazoo for his estate. Jerry was a first class guy and is truely missed by all. Didn't Jerry's brother in-law have a real nice F33A? Where are you based in Wisconsin? Greg Stratz
