What a shameful thing to say. I'm assuming you just got caught up in the spirit of the argument here, but really, Ed, this is going to far.

Training just up the coast from Hilton Head in North Myrtle Beach we talk a lot about ditching. The "theory" and I thank God I haven't had to test it, is that you land in the water just off the beach. Less likely to hit anyone and still not in deep water. Hopefully, survivable. Granted, my Sundowner has a MUCH lower stall speed and the 4 or 5 banner tow planes that have ditched while I've lived here have an even slower stall speed (all survived).

All that being said, this time of year, I might have shot for the beach as well. Not very heavily populated. Packed sand. Pretty good idea during the winter. Tragedy that it didn't work out in this case.

I've seen pics of this, anybody know how the planed ended up getting towed out of the water??

That's why, IMO, this pilot struck within a tide width of the beach. He knew that water landing is dangerous but most survivable within walk or reach of shore. So he missed by a few feet. Is that a crime?

I don't think so even if someone on shore gets hit. That's an accident. That's what accident insurance is for.

I love how if a pilot gets killed doing something stupid like flying in bad weather it's all "RIP, poor guy, don't talk about it in case his family get's upset, etc".......

But this poor bastard is jogging down the beach and gets hit by an airplane flown by a "selfish a$@%#$" trying to save his own skin and you're like "fuk him", "who cares".

a fellow pilot doing the best he could in a bad situation,is a "selfish a**hole".how can you say that,when you dont know all the facts? it is tragic for the guy and his family,but is was an accident.
so what,should we just call him a selfish pos and just put him in jail?

IMO the pilot flew the airplane into the best landing spot under the circumstamnces and happened to hit the jogger.

You're doing like the pilot the aimed for a jogging lane and you're allowed to do that. But you wouldn't get my vote on a jury.

I've had a windscreen ice up at 2000' on an instrument approach into Asheville, N.C. I was on the gauges until about 50' off the deck and then crabbed onto the remainder of the approach using only the pilots little window to see the runway. There was absolutely no forward visibility.

I don't know all the facts regarding this pilot's situation and I will not judge his actions. He did have a responsibility to the passenger in the plane which was a known factor. I hope no one else has to make the same judgment call.
