If I take the headset off, enable the speaker and transmit through the handheld microphone, there's a feedback noise. Any way around this? I've tried turning the volume down but it didn't help much.

Sidetone level is too high

How do achieve the right balance so you hear that with a headset, but don't feedback with a cockpit speaker?

Shouldn't the cockpit speaker have zero sidetone? Sidetone is designed to replace the natural hearing of your own voice that is blocked by the headset, so you shouldn't need it with open ears.

Seems like enabling cabin speaker should shut off sidetone and that is not happening in this case.

I believe that is correct for Garmin audio panels, but the Baker panels in the Avanti I (and almost all jets from the '60s thru the early 2000s) do have speaker sidetone. I think the newer Avanti II Evo has Becker digital panels, so it should be adjustable.

The other possibility is that the mic has a blocked noise cancelling port. That will cause it to pick up more ambient noise including speaker sidetone.

So I have Anthony to thank for mentoring me on how to get the most out of the Avanti. I admit I was apprehensive but the FF profile was very accurate and I landed with 660 lbs remaining in good VFR conditions.

As he so correctly pointed out bucking a 100kt+ HW for hours is no fun but can you imagine how awful it would be in a KA.

I enjoyed the time I have in various 90's, A100, B200, but I can't imagine going back now.

Thank you Anthony for helping me learn to really use the airplane.

Similar, but different flight. Long distance with the wind. Traverse City Mi to Ft Lauderdale last night. 1150nm, 3 hours burning 2000lbs. Started at FL370 to be super conservative on ensuring adequate reserves

Enroute the Garmin was estimating 1100lb remaining at FXE, but I knew the low level arrival would chew up additional 200lbs. Eventually I knew we were super safe on fuel so descended to 350 for more favorable winds/speed. Landed with 800lbs. Could have easily added another 200nm to this trip if needed.

These really are remarkable aircraft. Anthony, Ed, and several other P180 owners have been extremely generous with their time helping me understand how the Avanti could fit my evolving mission, especially with a young family.

I’m actively in the market for an Avanti. If any owners here are considering selling, I’d welcome the conversation. Ideally looking for a Garmin-equipped Avanti I or a well-cared-for Avanti II, but open to discussing any aircraft. PM me.

A very short blink of STALL on the annunciator panel and red ATT (I think) on both PFDs would be what failure? Sensor? Wiring?

Oh, and here's a video of landing and takeoff at Saanen, Switzerland. After owning the Piaggio for two years I finally had the confidence to do some hand flying. It's been IFR and AP to minimums so far.

Gorgeous landing! I think my favorite thing about the FBO listing for Gstaad Airport is that the Foreflight services listed are "GPU, Catering, Aircraft Parking, Personal Security." You don't see that often! ;)

Nice airport! Beautiful flight in.

And the amazing thing about the Avanti to me is how well it hand flies. Super easy, rock solid on an approach, yet fun to hand fly. Not truck-like at all.
