 Not even 170 mph. No way.

What I would believe is that he has a problem in his pitot-static system or a broken ASI.

I'd buy 170mph. That is just 147kts. At 8000', my 182-S (IO-540, 238hp) would make 142kts with full fuel and two in the cabin, and heavy shooting gear. It would make 145kts at 11,000 in cooler months. I could see a IO-550 pulling it along at 147kts.

Here's a pic of my C182 doing 148 KTAS, admittedly on a cold day and at 13,000’. Also a VERY nice tailwind that day!

Wish I wasn't inverted, can someone help with tihis? If you click on the pic it comes up correctly, for me at least!

I have an IO-550 C182Q that routinely sees 150 KTAS operating LOP around 14.5 gph, I’ve seen 160 KTAS ROP at 17.5 gph

Here at 5,500 msl at 156 KTAS and 14.2 gph at Basically 24 squared

Yes / I think my last GAMI Spread was 0.3 gph

That’s a unique beast, it’s a 310HP 550 on a newer C182T body. The standard 182T’s are in the 150-155 (the turbos).. so 170 isn’t impossible on the perfect day, but I agree it’s probably a stretch.. I’m thinking this is a 160/65 knot airplane under most conditions..

My 470/TS powered 182 hangs between 151-156 knots TAS pretty comfy. I’m still looking for a faster 470 powered 182..

Bill my guess is it is mere semantics, what you call a 337 we call an engineering order.

When I saw "gear saddles" and "337" in the same sentence my mind went in a third direction.

That was one of the annoying things about trying to find information for an old Skymaster using Google - searching for "337" + any aviation term was just about useless.

Same issue when I search for Turbine Inlet Temps as an abbreviation.

Are you running LOP at that fuel flow?

Patrick,

Typically, yes, this engine seems to like a little leaner better from a temperature standpoint, specially at higher altitude's. The picture I posted earlier I was out doing some airwork and moving around so I’m not sure what I had set up specifically. Usually between 7-9K I’m in the 11.5-12.1 GPH area, and 10.7-11.5 up at 10-11K. I just flew to Las Cruces the other day and at 11K coming home I was doing 153 knots true at 10.8gph.

It’s important to note that I have a ton of airframe speed mods and PowerFlow exhaust.

Steve Knopp, developer and owner of Pponk, showed the data on one of his 182's at 165 knots on his website. I have a 520 in my 182 with all the airframe speed mods and get 165 knots TAS on 17.5 GPH ROP, but never fly it that way because of the furl burn. I cruise at 150 kts TAS at 13.5 GPH ROP. The power is there for takeoff and climb, but a big waste of fuel to go fast. If you want to go fast on lower fuel burns, get a Bonanza ;)

IIRC, my '75 206 POH said there was a 7 mph penalty at 75%. At lower power settings the penalty was less. '75 was the first year with the improved streamlined pants so earlier years will be affected less.
