This adventure had no practical purpose other than I wanted to be an “astronaut” like Katy Perry. 650 is a neat machine!

So, when you landed did you bend down to kiss the ground?

It was a little under 8000 not bad! Still going .74 and only burning 1000 pph.

That’s really damn cool. Impressive.

Work on getting the 650 single pilot certified. Haha

Maybe one day we can buy an Optimus robot and have him be SIC. Would probably be the best co pilot possible.

First guy to get Optimus a type rating is our hero.

Mike

How long did it take you to get there and how heavy was the airplane?

You think that’s cool? In 1998, I went to 60,260 ft. Or my airplane did. I was firmly ground-bound on the dry lake at Edwards, but it sure felt like I was there.

Beautiful picture. Had you looked up you might have seen a Lear going past you at FL 510.
:D

Edit:

Lears used to use this capability to get above controlled airspace which used to be FL450, then they could go direct to wherever they wanted to go without needing an ATC clearance, but with the top of Class A now at FL600 that ended that

Well IIRC the 650 is certified with a service ceiling of 51,000 - don't know how practical that is though.

Only time I've been in the cockpit that high is in a Gulfstream - couldn't notice any difference but it's not like anyone is touching anything other than the FMS and PTT :pilot:

I was in a Citation X to FL470 once to witness a hot fuel climb test. We didn't go higher because conditions were becoming less critical due to the fuel was cooling faster than the aircraft was climbing.
