I love when things are cited that have no references, if you goto the latest official documents, the estimate was closer to 1.5b, not 2.7b

and that's 100% NASA's fault for doing a cost plus contract, also it's for the mobile launch platform, not a "stationary tower"

so much misinformation here

Yes, sensationalism at it's best.

Doesn't change the fact that SpaceX would probably build it faster and cheaper. If (and that's a big one) they would believe in it as a means to an end. I fully expect that Musk would say 'having mobile launch platform is stupid, we're not doing it no matter what'. SpaceX achieves extraordinary results because every single employee believes they are pulling in the right direction.

Impressive how they caught it by these tiny hard points. Earlier images looked like it was hanging by the grid fins, which are a somewhat larger target. The timing to accomplish that had to be just perfect.

The grid fins are moveable, wouldn't make any sense to design that system to both move and be able to suspend all that weight.

This is one of the best analysis I've seen on it, and it was published before the catch, this guy has spent thousands of hours reverse engineering and developing cad assets of the designs

Not just hanging on those tiny hard points, but perfectly oriented in all three axes while doing so. The hard points have to be oriented almost perfectly perpendicular to the catch arms, the booster has to be close to vertical and horizontally aligned within the reach of the arms, then it has to be hovering.

They literally put it on a dime.

They just posted buoy video of the Ship soft landing precisely where they wanted it to in the Indian Ocean. Its dark night but still mildly interesting.

It is on X if you are into such things.

Booster 13 got its Static Fire on the OLM already. Moving us closer to IFT6.
Guess the pad survived!

Rock on.

That’s crazy.

I have to think there wasn’t great hope of the S-0 infrastructure being intact.

It looks like flight 5 was less than a second from failure:

At least it could have crashed under its own terms and not entangled and collapsed the tower. THAT would have been a sight!
