the noise signature is really, really impressive.

still think battery tech is what will limit it, but the tech they have done is really cool! worth watching.

looking forward to the Mike C breakdown ;)

One of the side benefits Marina airport besides the cheapest 100ll in the Bay Area is getting to watch the Joby machine fly.

I've seen and heard it fly many times.

They recently had to blow out extra 100LL inventory for cheap because they had to replace a fuel pump and had to get rid of a couple thousand extra gallons, too!

The engineering here is cool and I wish them good luck trying to make this work as a business, besides just the tech! For noise, there's a video that plays back the comparison to aircraft (including Baron!) and helicopters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX7rdJm5v6s

I would like them to make a smaller vehicle that I could park at home and fly the 25 miles or so to my hangar. Range wouldn’t have to be huge.

Not to worry, the range will not be huge.

Interesting. If you had asked me to listen to the video, showed me the sound graphs of all others, and asked me to draw the Joby sound graph, I would have made it only slightly smaller in magnitude than the Cirrus. I think those graphs are something other than volume/dB, maybe just the frequency? It’s quieter for sure, but to my ears, only slightly so. They have a good marketing department.

Range is already better than you might think.

I’m not sure it is still available but Joby were offering free powered lift training for commercial pilot certification.

I think it will fly and get certified. But I don’t know if the fully integrated business model makes sense. They intend to make the fleet for themselves to operate commercially, and a whole heck of a lot of them at that.

Don't worry about the capitol costs. That may be higher than most desire.

Have they released full performance numbers yet (useful load, range vs cruise speed, noise footprint etc?), or anything on target price?

I wonder about battery life as well. I remember looking into the battery powered pseudo-satellites (solar / electric stratospheric planes) for a research proejct, and being surprised at how much battery life drove the flight cost per hour. (that may have been a special case).

I'm still not convinced what the market is for these vehicles. They are faster than helicopters, but on short trips that doesn't matter much, and there is very limited use of helicopters for passenger service. Even if they are quiet, I can't imagine landing one in a residential area due to hazards and downwash issues.

They are sort of cool and I can see them competing with helicopters in some applications, but they don't seem particularly transformational.

The market.....they are "green". All other performance parameters, including operating cost, can be beat by existing rotorcraft.

Believe it or not....hybrid hydrogen fuel cell is what everyone is looking at.
