New, never installed with GA 35, tray, conn kit. Comes with the database coupon. I am going to a 355 so this is new, not going to be installed. Asking 4650 but I'll ship for free in the US or Canada (email me first to discuss timing). New Warranty applies, never installed. Bought earlier this year.

Here is the link for Garmin's desription

This is really a great little unit. Pairs well with Garmin GI275s.

Best,

Tom

Concur. I like that I can load flight plans from Foreflight without buying more Garmin stuff. It has almost everything the more expensive units have except a big display. Plus it’s very low weight.

I installed the 355 GPS/Comm, and while it is a great unit, I would have preferred to install the Garmin 175 GPS and 225 Comm Radio (not much overall price difference). There are a couple of features on the 175 that are not available on the 355 such as CDI that might be handy in the case of a G5 failure. Also course scaling, not needed with my GFC500, but essential for older autopilots such as my thankfully removed Century 1. I have the 355 above a 255 nav/comm, but always use the 255 comm as it is much easier to manipulate in rough air. The same would be true of the 225 comm.

My 2 cents worth, take it or leave it!

I agree the GPS-175 is a great unit, especially when connected with a CDI. Awesome to see it fly a "visual approach" to a runway with both lateral and vertical guidance as if on an ILS (for the runways it has this information for). Drives my Trio Pro Pilot autopilot like a champ!

Definitely not like an ILS as it does not provide obstacle clearance. The "guidance" is merely for situation awareness. However, I love my 175 as well!!

Actually the GPS 175 has ILS-similar performance for certain approaches. That terrain awareness comment is nutty. Let's look at the facts:

From FAA:
Quote:
WAAS LPVs (Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance) provide similar level of service to Category I ILS (Instrument Landing System) vertical guidance. The accuracy of WAAS is 7.6 meters or better

From Garmin regarding your terrain awareness comment:
Quote:
Garmin GPS 175 is equipped with advanced terrain awareness.

From Garmin regarding approach capabilities:
Quote:
* GPS 175 include a WAAS/SBAS GPS that is IFR approach-capable
* GPS 175 has moving map, flight plan, nearest, procedures, waypoint information and terrain pages
* GPS 175 is WAAS IFR-approach-capable of LPV, Lateral Performance (LP), as well as all Area Navigation (RNAV) approaches. Many approaches offer vertical approach guidance as low as 200-feet above ground level (AGL)
* easily generate customized holding patterns
* Visual approaches are also available within the GPS 175/GNX 375 and provide lateral and vertical approach guidance in visual flight conditions. Visual approaches offer added assurance at unfamiliar airports or in challenging environments to ensure the aircraft is aligned properly with the correct runway, while also taking into consideration terrain and obstacle avoidance
* GPS 175 can be coupled to autopilots so procedures such as holds, radius-to-fix (RF) legs and missed approaches may be flown automatically (way better than a GNS 430W/530W ;) )
* Garmin GPS 175 features SafeTaxi
* Garmin GPS 175 has Connext® cockpit connectivity for flight plans and mobile connectivity

From AOPA:
Quote:
The gold standard for WAAS approaches is the LPV, which stands for localizer performance with vertical guidance. Flying an LPV approach is virtually identical to an ILS (instrument landing system)—and LPV approaches allow descents as low as 200 to 250 feet above the runway, just like an old-school ILS.

You might want to update your knowledge about the GPS 175 before telling people what can't do.

Paul, I think Dan was talking about the visual approach function. He is correct.

I'm not an expert here but:

* Visual approaches are also available within the GPS 175/GNX 375 and provide lateral and vertical approach guidance in visual flight conditions. Visual approaches offer added assurance at unfamiliar airports or in challenging environments to ensure the aircraft is aligned properly with the correct runway, while also taking into consideration terrain and obstacle avoidance

Obviously not the same as an LPV approach but it's not going to run you into a cell tower or a mountain either.

How does that work? Don't you need the Garmin Flightstream system?

George

No. Connect through bluetooth to your iOS device, and ForeFlight will see the device and be able to transfer flight plans.

Hijacking the thread......Do you need the 510 with a 750xi? I know you do for the 750.

A 15-second online Garmin search for that question shows that the 510 would be required for the Xi. Good to know because the topic GPS 175 has Connext® cockpit connectivity built in.
