Haha - you're going to love it regardless. That time is already spent so not you're just gaining free time every week from here on out :-).

Thanks. And if I haven’t told you enough, I so appreciate you lending me your car many years ago in Myrtle. Was a treat. You Always have room and board and car in Utah if passing through.

Aside from the autopilot this has become my number one reason I love my Tesla. I hate pumping gas.

Chip-

My wife can't seem to ever find a gas station (she always waits for the yellow light and more), but she is able to charge our Jeep Wrangler 4xe every night in the garage. Seeing that, was proof enough for me, plugin hybrids or EV's will take over.

I am personally a fan of plugin hybrids. Electric around town and gas for long road trips. 80% of my miles would be electric, but I don't have range anxiety which is very real in Montana.

The range of a plane defines your effective radius of travel. If you add a stop, the effective speed of the plane drops significantly. Jets, in particular, want to get high and stay there for efficient operation, so a fuel stop is a serious hit.

Then why do you have a Tesla? Same problem. Last summer I took my son from Bozeman to Boise for a swim meet - 476 miles. His buddy drove the family Tesla, it took him 2 hours longer to get there, because he had to stop to recharge multiple times.

I have buddy that has a Tesla. He can't make it to Bozeman to Billing (145 miles) and back without having to stop to recharge. I can drive to Billings and back twice before I have to fill-up. I would go crazy if I had to constantly charge 20+ minutes here and there. What a waste of life, baby sitting a vehicle. Charge at home, perfect.

I've done the math, Telsa's only average 55 mph on road trips with required stops. It's like going back to the Nixon days.

Don't get me wrong, I like electric cars and plugin hybrids. I think they fit a space, but to think all of us should switch for all use cases - not going to happen. It's like a plane, define the mission for it's use.

I've told my kids multiple times, they will be the first generation where everyone will have an EV for day to day and a gas car for road trips. I think that's a good tradeoff.

If you are road tripping in a Tesla, you are doing it wrong

If you are road tripping in a Tesla and you are on this forum because you also own an airplane, you are doing it REALLY wrong

Remember when these long Cirrus threads were all about the parachutes, using “risk credit,” the costs unique to the SR Cirrus planes, the safety record, etc.?

And now it’s the big shot jet pilots arguing about who made the smartest purchase, and why their particular choices are superior compared to (the blind and/or ignorant) others.

It’s amusing. I’m just glad I don’t have money, so I don’t have to make these difficult decisions… :D

People are buying EV's

I bought an EV because it is a better driving experience. I plug it in once a week at home, and there is a lot of satisfaction of never having to stop at a gas station. The way it performs is fantastic. I'm not buying a gas car ever again.

Mike C.

Mike did you consider the lost cost of capital versus a 25 year old car? The cost of depreciation? You could buy a lot of fuel for those lost fixed costs. Now that Tesla production has caught up to the initial demand the depreciation of all electric cars is horrible. Just ask Hertz they just took a huge adjustment in amortization.

Sorry I could not resist …. :bugeye:

It’s a proven fact that the 2003 Dodge Caravan carries more, has more range, and will arrive within 5 minutes of the Tesla on 95% of trips. You pay for all the fuel and maintenance with just the money saved from the cost of capital on the Tesla!

The only possible conclusion is that Mike doesn’t care about money.

Now, if we can only get the Electric Car thread to drift over to VJ vs. Citation, that would make my day.

What is your buddy doing while in Billings? Is he really running into town for 10 minutes and running back home? He's probably there for a some amount of time and could charge while doing other things. The whole beauty of an EV is that you DON'T have to babysit it while "fueling." You can be doing other things while it is happening.

I disagree. You can't just go hookup an EV at the location your going to. In my buddies case he was going to a soccer game at a field. Where do you hook up while you watch? I see it all the time at the local Tesla fast charger. People sitting there waiting for their car to fuel up.

And back to the Cirrus VJ. Mike C has valid arguments from his perspective, but most Cirrus VJ owners don't have that perspective, because they don't live in that part of the aviation world.

Cirrus is more like Apple; they created an amazing ecosystem with a walled off garden. If you fit in the garden and can afford/willing to pay the premium, it delivers and amazing experience. A Cirrus VJ would be on my short list, just because I would save $1m in hangar costs from the start. That alone would pay the Jetstream costs on Cirrus.

A $1M hangar?

You must be exaggerating, no?

My hangar with valet parking is $8640/year.

I feel like a new Tesla is the car equivalent of hiring Chip to get you a brand new jet on a program even. :D

We all have our priorities.

Maybe the guys buying brand new jets buy older retrofitted yachts to make it up?

Nice to live in a flyover state when you have a plane ;)
