The other reconnaissance plane that does not have a lot of info on how it performed or what it did is the RB-57F. I think I saw once once at one of the AMA semi-official museums.

Best talk I ever attended at Oshkosh was by an RB-57 guy. Talked about sampling nuke tests and taking pictures of everything south of Brownsville. They attached the extra pod jets if the mission called for max altitude - the pod jets gave them a few thousand feet. Otherwise flew without them and had additional range/endurance.

Presenter said the airplane was a plus/minus 80K' airframe, depending on OAT...

Very, very interesting.

We also used the B-47 for this. Story about one of the missions is at:

Wasn't recon the first use of aircraft?

"They're over that hill, a lot of 'em"

Then dropping bombs by hand, then air to air combat.

Early Recon planes:
Lockeed F5 Lightning.
Boeing RB-47

Specifically, balloons were used in battle as far back as the late 1700s:

And in the US Civil War:

NASA still has three WB-57 aircraft, based at Ellington Field.

In fact, 10 years ago, they got their third WB back after it was taken out of the Boneyard. It hadn't flown in over 41 years. Former U-2 pilot Tom Parent flew it to Houston where it now works.
