Matt, you had a rough start on your Avanti ownership, that's for sure. But fingers crossed it will stay good for awhile now and you get to enjoy it without much interruption.

I am thinking Penman's idea of operating cost long term is more likely than Adam's. I really REALLY REALLY want to be wrong. I spoke with Stevens in Greenville,SC who did not give me the warm fuzzies on maintenance and downtime.

Who else maintains Avanti this side of Rockies besides Stevens and Southwest Aviation Specialties?

Above quote almost two years ago. So very glad I did not get cold feet and purchased Avanti for my wife’s comfort. Currently in shop for 12 month inspection and let me think what else  ,

Oh yeah, my lav motor quit plus new front tires.

No, of course it is not Meridian cheap with the training I choose to do.
Nothing anywhere close to significant has broken in ~300 hours.

Still grinning

I'd be interested to see where other folks land with a 5 year overhaul/inspection. Unless you time your ownership and sale between major checks, it would be difficult to be under 1K hr before fuel.

ICJ, TPE, Stevens all quoted the 5 year inspection/OH at around 250K and 6 mon minimum as a number of the required overhaul items have single source lead times.

Now, my 5 year was pushed up because of a few things.
1. After waiting 6 mon for parts to get OH, we ended up buying new parts outright.
2. Lots of corrosion. Wings, Body, Props etc
3. The shop that did my interior work made some poor installs and I had a lot of bluewater damage and needed new toilet, fabrication etc.

But lets assume over a 7 year ownership and no discrepancies. An owner might have
1. 15K annuals x 7 = 105K
2. 30K 2 year checks x 3 = 90K
3. A, B and C checks = 50K (probably low here)
4. 250K 5 year check/OH = 250K
5. Landing Gear OH = 200K
6. Engine OH = 1M
7. D check = Oh boy!

So its pretty easy to hit about 1.5M over the course of say 6-7 years of ownership. I'd guess that would put most people around 1K per hour before fuel, consumables and unknowns.

I've just started getting quotes on the D check so I can start preparing. The ballpark from ICJ was 400K but waiting for actual quotes.

My plane just went through 5yr,2yr,1yr,6mo,200hr&B inspection. I was into it about 150k with squawks. Not sure if you are talking different inspections then what I experienced. My simple understanding is the 2yr doesn't add that much because it is on mostly an annual inspection with a touch more. My quotes for inspections were much less but it depends on squawks obviously. The C&D inspections can get very expensive is my understanding. I'm sure hoping those numbers mentioned aren't what it is going to take.

What's the 5 year check at $250K? That doesn't compute.

Great performing planes, but thanks for the reality check.

What is the gear made of that it costs 40k a year to overhaul?

That just seems like a crazy amount of money.

The gear has always been crazy pricey. Think it has to do with the European approach (the Dowty props on the Commanders are also out of whack). It's a culture there that anything with TP's is considered heavy duty charter/part 135 equipment and is priced thereafter.

But here in US, the overhaul is not technically required part 91.

The 5 year is both a check and a bunch of required overhauls that are due at 5 years.
For example, flap actuators, trim actuators, cabin heater, starter generators etc all require overhaul at 5 years. Not just inspection. I'd be happy to post the quotes if that was not frowned upon for the sake of science.

So yes, we got 4 quotes for the 5 year check and 5 year required OH's and none were below 250K and shorter than 6 mons.

The 5 year check does in include the 1 and 2 year.

@Dayrl - where did you get your 5 year done?

I didn't need to do all those overhauls. There were a few that were required but maybe it's because I did it early. I had Sims Air do all my work because when i bought the plane it was already there. My understanding on a 5yr is not the same as yours.

The 5 year OH are not technically required for Part 91. Its like the gear.
I should also clarify some of it was 5 year OH and others 3000HR overhauls. I'll need to go back see where each one fell.

What I don't like is you have 3000HR overhauls and then 600 hrs later you have D check. It would have been much more convenient to time OH's with major checks.

But if you are at 150K without the overhauls, that's about right. Some of these were 30-40K a piece.

I have the full maintenance manuals in PDF. I'll strip out and post some of the overhaul schedules if people want. Its large.

I recant. Looking at my list of overhaul items, 4 of them were 5-year items, and 11 were 3000HR.
And the most expensive ones were the 3000HR.

Flap Control System Drive Unit:
FWD Wing Flap Actuators:
Fuel Booster Pumps
Hydraulic Power Motoer
Wing A/I Protection Valves:

Were the most expensive with a quick read.

Enjoying the discussion. I have always like the P180 and my thinking is that it is an option if Jet-A prices go parabolic. However I can buy a lot of Jet-A for the recently quoted maintenance costs on a P180!

It is my understanding that overhauls are not required for Part 91. Would it not make sense to pick up a P180 that is needing a major OH and just fly it Part 91 and skip all of the overhauls? Obviously it would hurt resale value but with some of these overhaul prices it may not matter?
