Challenger 300/350 cruises at .80M with an Mmo of .83M (usually done between FL410 and FL450). Company slows us down a smidge to .78 if we are just doing a repo flight w/o pax. The airline version of the CRJ I used to fly normally cruises between .74 and .80M depending on loads, leg distance, ISA, etc.. We were also capped at FL370 by the company. Neither of those fall into the cheap operational category...

Citation CJ4 - we have to pull back even at FL450 not to exceed .77M. So we normally try to target .76M - fuel burn 1000lbs/hr Citation X (with winglets) - pulling back not to exceed .92M until we hit FL 450 normally cruise between FL470 and FL490 where we plan on .88M to .89M ~1600lbs/hr

Legacy 450/500 is advertised at .83M. Somedays it will do .83 but then Ms. Brazil starts yelling "HIGH SPEED" because .83 is in the barber pole. We always cruise at .82 with 10 bodies or none.

The new Global 8000 will have an MMO of 0.94M. Probably cruise up to 0.92M or so burning lots of fuel no doubt.

just ONCE in my life, I want ATC to ask me my mach number. I am practiced and ready to go. That would be Mach point fooooouur four five... Would you like me to slow it down for ya? .445 all day long at 30,000 feet. But then again only burning 240pph which equates to 8.4 statute miles per gallon. In the big SUV territory. Here was a Mustang over the top of me with 118 knots on the nose. Not sure what the winds were at FL350, edit I was 26 knots slower ground speed at FL250. Actually the 118 knots was a little after this picture was taken. Must have been a pretty big gradient though. Maybe he pulled the power back to extend range? The jet stream was wicked that day.

8.4- That's Prius like. The Mustang here is around 5 MPG and burns Avgas. Pilot and Passenger only. Kinda loud too. Does put a big smile on your face.

Falcon 10 is a lot of speed for the acquisition cost. Well above .80 and some days .85
Parts and maintenance may require more effort than a Citation..

You buy a fast airplane not for the tailwind days, but for the headwind days. For my V, 120 knots on the nose means 300 knots groundspeed. That is tolerable. On a 300 nm flight with 30-40 knots of wind, the round trip times vary by 4 or 5 minutes. The extra speed does make the wind factor quite a bit less. Also, being able to go up to FL450 sometimes allows you to get into reduced headwinds. They can be 30-40 knots less than at FL400. The range at FL450 into a headwind can be dramatically longer than lower both for reduced fuel flow and also reduced headwinds. Mike C.
