This showed up in my news feed and I’m curious what it is. Any ideas?

Thanks! I looked it up and the specs were a bit disappointing for a $1.4 million airplane.

It sure looks cool though.

If you try to start a company to make planes, I bet this will get easier to understand.

Highly regulated, low volume, complex rules, high liability product.

I understand the seller's side of list prices for new airplanes.

The buyer's side baffles me.

The cockpit looks like a modern supercar. People spend way more money on them and they won't even fly you anywhere.

What baffled me was how a modern carbon fiber retract only does 180 knots at 16,000 feet with a 300 hp engine. My 40-year old antique of an A36 will do 195 kts at the same altitude with a 1,000+ nm range compared to 750 nm for this plane.

Why is it so slow and range-limited? Maybe the diesel but trucks don't suffer the same performance penalty.

They just put too small of fuel tanks in there. Has plenty of useful load. Market likely is Europe, with typically shorter flights. Still silly. Otherwise, pretty awesome plane.

Anyone know what it burns to do 180kt?

I can only find "max range fuel consumption" of 9 gph

The DA50 has half the fuel burn and the cabin is wide enough to fit two bulky grownups next to each other comfortably.

And did I mention that it looks like a supercar? It may surprise you to learn that not all wealthy buyers make their decision based on raw performance numbers alone ;-)

I believe it is a characteristic of diesels. You can only get so much performance out of a turbocharger and a diesel uses more of it for power at low altitude, leaving less to maintain power at higher altitudes. You can theoretically use series turbos, but look how well that worked for Raptor.
