Can anybody explain why uploaded photos are rotated 90 degrees on BT? They are oriented normally in my file, but rotated when uploaded to the FS forum.

P-factor torque causes the photo to rotate. Little known fact is that the P stands for photo.

Jpg images can (but don't have to) contain "metadata" (EXIF) which indicates that the image should be rotated before it's displayed. There are two ways a computer can rotate an image. One is to reorder the pixels (along with in some cases resampling them) and the other is to adjust or add the rotation information in the metadata. If your image was rotated by metadata changes it's up to whatever displays that image to present it with the correct orientation.

The problem you're seeing is that the BT forum software strips and ignores that metadata information from the images shown inside a post. If the viewer clicks on the image in the post it will be expanded and rotated properly.

You can resolve this a couple different ways. One is convert the image to the png format which usually eliminates the rotation information in the image because this feature was added very late in the png format development and isn't usually implemented in apps.

The best way is to use a tool that rotates the image by reordering the pixels and sets the metadata rotation to zero. There are free apps that will do this which can be downloaded from the internet but I don't have a link right now and most of these apps only work on specific operating systems. Google: jpg exif rotation to find some.

There are several possible sources of jpeg images with rotation called for in the metadata. But these days iPhones are the most common source just because there are so many of them. Plus many of the other sources are mostly used by people who understand this aspect of the jpeg standard.

You need to resize the photos to correspond to the pixel length and width given in the photo upload instructions. I resize my photos and they are always right-side-up when I post, but if I leave them as I took them then they will sometimes rotate. I have also found that if they do rotate when I click on them they will be in the correct orientation eventough they are displayed on here as rotated.
