I saw a note on a work order saying they dressed a prop nick. But saw this often on Mits. I wonder if aggressive beta can aggravate this?

Sorry about your downtime Matt. We have not experienced that so far.

Probably, though I don’t have much trouble with my Mits and I’m using beta every flight.

I wonder if the geometry of the Piaggio, with the props behind the main gear, would add to a problem if there was some kind of rough runway environment.

Or over-aggressive mechanic'ing? KA's get nicks in blades all the time, don't recall any of them being grounding.

Not exactly sure when it occurred. I half suspect it went unnoticed for a while. I think its been maybe 20 hours since it came back from ICJ....so its not like we are beating it to death.

I've always thought of our home airport as a decent runway (LNS) so I wouldn't consider it rough.

Perhaps its just a bad string of luck and I'll get past it. I think part of it is its so different to the people in this area. Everyone has an opinion about "what they heard".

Anyways, prop comes off today to head to the shop.

Very common in aviation…

Ugh, sorry to hear it. Is it just a large nick in blade? Or something worse? I guess there was no way to just file it out like most prop nicks?

Matt,

I have had one nick in one blade and small damage to two compressor blades which I suspect was caused by one rock. I'm pretty sure it happened on the taxiway at home airport. That's in a couple hundred hours.

My props are back from OH and I'm running it up in the morning. Twenty two days from drop off to pick up. Not bad.

On the prop damage I got mine on a taxiway that was damaged by the airport allowing a 100,000 pound aircraft to routinely taxi on an 80,000 pound taxiway. Another pilot has been picking a baggy of rocks up on that taxiway every week for a year. So, I met with the mayor, city manager and director of airports and when the latter kept telling me what a great job of maintaining and managing the facility they were doing I just reached into my briefcase and wordlessly tossed a 5 pound bag of rocks into the middle of the mayor's conference table. BOOM! and then stunned silence. I then pitched the photos of my compressor blades to the director and said "Those rocks have only cost me $3k. Not much money but it's my money. Now, if an engine grenades on takeoff in a P180 it can be dicey with a full load of passengers in the back. If that happens and it doesn't go well, well then it'll be a lot more than $3k and it'll be your money." Next week they had a NOTAM out about the taxiway repairs, instructions not to pick up rocks as that would damage the taxiway  and they repaired it the next week.

So far no more prop damage...

Evidence being such an inconvenient thing to those who may have liability...surprised they did not threaten you with stealing public property.

Well, I did point out that the pilot who collects the rocks was the chief pilot for the biggest billionaire in town. They weren't my rocks, even the one(s) that went through my engine. I was just borrowing them...

A Blackhawk flew by down the ramp as I was sitting in plane today. Was surprised how much FOD it was kicking up.

What's everyone's experience with foreign object damage to the props?

I'm getting frustrated with all the downtime :pullhair:
Here is how I found a B350i I was supposed to fly in Africa. Not sure how it happened? Pavement edge strike or runway/taxiway light? Previous pilots didn't report anything.

In the end I only ferried the plane to Germany where they replaced the blade (and fixed many, many other issues). Never flew that airplane again though :D

NB: Despite what was written and signed by the A&P, that blade hollow was way out of tolerances! Both in length and depth.

Last week trip to Bahamas
Had to land Chub Cay for customs then over to Staniel Cay’s 3000 foot strip to see live bacon. Food at Staniel Cay resort is surprisingly good BTW.
Three landings at Bahamian fair strips and props are good. New small ding in paint just aft of nose cone.

Anthony,
I am in Vegas now. 1683 NM back to Charlotte Thursday with ~50 knot tailwind forecast.
Not sure how quick I can get up out of Vegas and know I will get pushed down low early going into EQY. Would be thrilled to go non stop but thinking it is a pipe dream.
Possible stop in Missouri has cheap fuel….Worth it to go non stop if able.

Coming back from Cali I tried FL410 with 4 people and bags but kinda floundered at 309 knots then went back to 390.

3 people and about 700 pounds of people and bags.

Do I stand a chance…..should I try?

Where is that rollN dice emoji when U needZ it

P.S. Grand Canyon West (1G4) is a cool place to fly in and visit.

1683nm with a 50kt gradient would be tight at higher power settings but you likely could do it at max range power and FL390. Would take 5hrs though, not sure you would want to sit for that long! Reserve would be 600lbs so you would need great weather at destination and a clean descent too.

Other issue is if you don’t get a direct climb out from Vegas it will hurt your fuel situation. Last few times out of there I have gotten a crummy climb.

Surprised about your FL410 performance. What did book say you should do?

Book said I was a bit too heavy to attempt FL410. If I am at FL390 I make book power for FL370 so I thought 410 might work.

Taking off from Napa at gross after about two hours we were just east of Denver so I was around 10,700 when I climbed to 410

Will be departing around 11,600#
For me to attempt non stop I will have to get a near continuous climb to FL390 where I will stay for an hour or so then attempt FL410 again.

My wife has flown with me 5 hours in Columbia back from Bar Harbor Maine.
5 hours in this plane with the potty and relief tube is a picnic.

The range penalty for step climbing isn’t too bad if you are disciplined about pulling power back to LRC at every stop.

I flew 1500nm w a 30kt push recently but had to depart VFR and stay under Fl180 for a while due to ATC system running out of squawk codes. I just followed book numbers and only burned about 40lbs more than my plan of unrestricted climb.

I meant 5 hrs for pilot btw - back passengers could be happy for days :)
