My last prop when I pulled back to 1900 I got a few extra knots. The one I have now does not seem to change efficiency one way or another above 1900 and loses below. I cannot account for why.

I have ordered a 5 blade, not because the one I have now is bad but because it is a loner. They wanted 40k to OH my last prop.

I just had an overhaul quote for a 5 blade on a TBM 900 at less than 1/2 of that price.

We brought them two units to OH'd. My opinion is that are trying to push people to upgrade. We complained to Hartzell and they stood behind the shop. The two props we brought them simply had bad seals from sitting too long.

I am currently using a 4 blade I borrowed from a friend. The 5 blades were 6 months out.

My choices seem limited. I could get a MT five blade but .......

I was impressed with the MT folks I met at OSH- maybe I'm naive. Seems that everyone I've talked to has had issues with them.

I was very interested in the 7 blade PC12 mod. again- don't know how well it's supported.

Gary,

I think nearly all of the TBM world “influencers” prefer the Hartzell over MT.

If memory serves, the knock is the MT is a wood core, while the Hartzell is a structural foam. I am open to be fact checked on that, it’s been 6 or 7 years since I bought a 5 blade.

Buddy has mt 5 blade and it’s very quiet in cabin compared to 4 blade hartzell

Of course it’s got 300 hrs over 5 yrs and developed a vibration last week and the shop says it’s way out of balance and can’t be done in the field so he’s not thrilled.

Came on his new to him plane he didn’t pick it.

The 5 blade Hartzell is quieter than the 4 blade as well.

Thats crazy, any prop shop can overhaul it for under 10k.
Im hearing 25-30k to overhaul a 5 blade, Im keeping my 4 blade as its easy to file if you nick it and your never stuck.

5 blades are much less than that to overhaul.

Had a slightly awkward conversation with ATC yesterday….

Me: Center, TBM 0MB, request
Center: Go ahead
Me: request right deviation for 5 miles
Center: Is there a buildup there?
Me: (looking at clear sky and a 105 knot tailwind about 40 degrees off my current heading) Ummm.. no
Center: Reason for the deviation?
Me: I want to go really fast…
Center: Right deviation approved, direct destination when able and advise

It worked out to 408kts GS!

Yeah, just don’t know what to say, but you have to do it. I hit over 400 knots in a Meridian one day. There were clouds in the sky. I asked for left deviation, ATC didn’t query why. Was going faster than any of the jets going the other way.

I know that TBM aircraft are expensive to maintain but I just got my 900 out of a B+annual and it was 26K and I only had main tires installed during the last year..We flew it 175 hours and did not cancel any trips in the last year..The annual was done at a TBM service center.

-47C, FL290. (ITT bumped because ECS went to "bleed high" right before the pic. I usually fly it cooler).
