Same purchase price, similar equipment, Navajo 4000 TT 350 hour Motors, Shrike 9000TT 800 hour Motors. Which one would you buy and why?

GO!

The Navajo is easier to maintain, it is easy to get parts for, fits in a smaller hangar since the tail isn't ridiculously tall like the Commander...

and... you don't have to worry about losing a wing due to spar cracks.

When you're done with it, there will ALWAYS be a buyer for a Navajo.

The Shrike Commander? Not so much.

GO!

Btw...in this scenario either the Navajo is way underpriced or the Commander is way overpriced. A low time Navajo with low time motors is getting to be somewhat of a unicorn.

Find me a good Shrike and I’ll buy it today. Easy to sell, especially relative to our beloved Aerostars.

Ridiculous comment. The Shrike wing is built like a brick outhouse.

The most obvious benefit of the Shike is that anyone can get in and out of it. If someone had compromised knees ,or mobility in general, I'd be concerned about them getting out of a Navajo. Especially after reading the recent thread here suggesting no ladders after age 50 and all the broken reasons to back that up.

Second, it is industrial grade vs the consumer grade Navajo.

In 40 years of owning a Shrike we've never had a problem with parts.
It has been easy to maintain. You simply use the right people.
And that ridiculously large tail? That's how you get a Vmc of 65.

I have no doubt about that Bruce, but I still maintain there would be tenfold more buyers for the Navajo.

Edit: There are currently 3 AC50 on Flightaware and 32 PA31.

And 5 AEST. :hide:

Not worried about the wing spar. I’m coming from an MU2 so I’m all too familiar with fact vs fiction. Hangar size isn’t an issue either.

All the above! Particularly the comment about "industrial grade" build quality. The normally aspirated Lycomings are damn near bullet proof as well.

Yes. we had a Cheiftan, Shrike, B58 at the same time on charter. All good planes. It’s like apples, oranges and tangerines. You get a Navajo for the cabin and turbos. Baron to go fast and ‘cause you’re a Bonanza man. More important is the quality of the airplane these days. Any one of them might not be a deal if free at this stage in life. And the guys who can keep any of them up are getting harder to find. If your hangar is next to a piper guru, you should buy a piper. Franky the only thing that scares me about Navajos is that rats nest of high amp wires snaking around the front of the plane. But a smart guy can probably restore that too.

A jam up Shrike is expensive and extremely difficult to find. I know of none available right now. What I can tell with a fair bit of confidence is that if you buy a rough one with a bunch of deferred mx and expect to have a good time and maintain if with someone unfamiliar, you’re barking up the wrong tree. It’s like Forrest said about Aerostars, there are no $150k Aerostars, only $450k ones  And it’s why my Aerostar is 1000 miles away now getting work done.

I plan to fly my Shrike about 5 hours tomorrow. I also agree that if you want to fly old piston twins hundreds of hours a year without major interruption of service, you should have two!
