I have a Lancair 235 with Lycoming O-290 motor. Is certified as Experimental Homebuilt. Does an honest 170 MPH at 14,000 ft, on 6.5 GPH. A cross country machine that is cheaper than driving and way faster. It’s also to small to take may family on trips. I would like to trade for a Beechcraft H-35 or later a 33, or $55,000

Following this thread with interest since I have the same kind of plane and engine.

A few years ago I flew across the Country and back - 5,000 s.m. altogether. I burned a total of 266 gallons / $1,448. Doing the math, that works out to 29 sm per gallon. I was flying at Bonanza speeds. If you're flying solo or with a light passenger, the Lancair is a traveling machine.

Out of curiosity, what is the full fuel payload and how much fuel does it hold?

Also, luggage space ?

If your question was directed to me, My Lancair holds 43 gallons, but my bladder won't allow me to fly for six hours - four is about my limit. The baggage compartment is small and limited to 50 lbs. I could fit a sleeping bag, clothes bag, canopy cover, tools, supplies, etc. back there with no problem.

It is a great solo plane for a 200# pilot and a lot of luggage, or two people and backpacks. I have done both. Flew from Denver to Sedona and back with my wife a few weeks ago. Took tent, cooler, sleeping bag, tie downs, tools, lawn chair and clean cloths for everyday at Oshkosh last week. Fits 50 lbs in luggage space behind the seats and the rest in the passenger seat.

You've got Pat Holloran's 235?!? Very cool. For those who don't know, Pat Holloran was an SR-71 pilot and his L-235/290 was the closest thing to an SR-71 he could fly after he retired.

The Lancair is a sports car.

Not to take away from the sale but as a side note, I was riding my bike on a TUS bike path couple of years ago and passed a gentleman with a SR-71/U-2 cap. Stopped and chatted...turned out to be Maj/Gen Halloran. Very highly respected AF general, one of the first to fly the U-2 and SR-71. He did mention he owned an experimental a/c.

Pat Halloran was my father's favorite Wing Commander. He's a life-long bachelor that while he was the 9th SRW Wing Commander took most of his meals at the Beale AFB Officer's Club. I was a waiter there in high school and waited on him frequently. He always asked about my dad and mom. Later, when I was applying for an Air Force medical school scholarship, MG Halloran wrote me a first-rate recommendation, and I was awarded one of the very few four-year scholarships. Pat, my father (age 91), and I have kept in touch over the years and we've talked pros & cons, Lancair & A36 at Oshkosh a time or two. You can count on it that N4464D was a pretty near flawless airplane and maintained to the highest standards while Pat had her. I suspect Brian's stewardship has been the same.

I'd love to have her, but it makes no sense to have two airplanes with such similar capabilities.
