Other than for the gonadal look of the larger diameter tires, the additional benefit of the smooth tread is that it won't trap gravel in the grooves. That will keep rocks from being flung forward into the propeller arc on takeoff or landing. Ask me how I know....

29's are nice size for 180. Roughest ours sees is my hayfield but it sure keeps the rattling and banging down even on a smooth field. My buddies girlfriend flew for a lodge on Kodiak island and she said 29s are for looks and real bushplanes need a tire that starts with a 3. I love the way the 180 flies on 8.50s, very light controls, I can shove it around using the retractable tailpull handles, decently fast. 29s make it look like a BEAST. 3 pts are better, it soaks up all the rattles and bumps on grass, it looks AWESOME but it does fly a little slower I think 4-5 kts less for me, its heavier on the controls, roll is slower and you can feel them shake and wiggle even in cruise, but did I mention they looks just so TOUGH. Get some 29s Doc! Attachment: IMG-0261.JPG Attachment: IMG-0306.JPG

She had only flown the smaller tundra tires here in the midwest for fun and goofing off. She helped a friend out flying for them in AK and the local pilots showed her why they like big tires.
She's an awesome lady and a great soul. Kind and gentle and endlessly patient and selfless. She can fly anything, rides bareback on a horse, motorcycle, slalom ski, downhill ski, ballroom dance, flies floats, can bait a hook or change a diaper. She's a CFI too. My buddies a lucky man. We're blessed to be her friend!

Attachment: IMG-0233.JPG The yellow cub she's flying has 26 inch good year blimp tires, they are only a smidge bigger than 8.50s tires on the 180 we normally use but are way way way softer and nicer ride. No stones to mar up the finish on the pretty cub either.

Don’t poke a pin hole leak in the RHS tire! Your next trip to the hangar you’ll need a crying towel! Seriously, I see a hazard there. Could end badly.

Jacob:
1.- Congratulations on resisting the urge to mess with your wing leading edges. The original, classic wing and wingtips are a work of art. I only did mine because I taxied across low-hanging barbed wire once too many times. An old timer from JAARS once told me that the cuffs, fences, etc. only serve to get the pilot deeper in doo-doo before it gets to be too late.
2.- Please tell your buddy with the girlfriend that I hate him. That probably applies to the majority of the guys on this thread, even if some may not want to admit it.
3.- I'm going back to fat tires instead of those girlie skinny ones, exposed brake calipers instead of those silly-a$$ wheel panties, and western saddles instead of those effeminate English ones, in hope that I might get lucky.
Best,
TN

Tom, At our age, it's probably going to take more than "luck". AND, That horse is beautiful. AND, I'm one of the sissy "skinny tire" guys that thinks the 180 is the coolest plane on the planet when dressed up for the ball. Jg
