Outstanding! We cut shirt tails for solos, what is the equivalent for the first flight of home builds?

So what did your test pilot say? Any squawks?

Beautiful aircraft. Congratulations on the first flight. I’ve been following this thread over the years and am thrilled to hear the news. I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. I look forward to seeing your plane in the skies!

Binge drinking! Not really. But we did go out for a really nice dinner!

Oh yeah, of course:
- Airspeed reading 30 kts. low (leak in the pitot line, covered by a fitting)
- Igniters on turned the generator off and vice-versa (software error)
- Door seals deflated once during runup, didn't repeat (software logic error)
- Slight play or binding in the elevator. This was an interesting one. Checked the linkage, it was perfect. Same with elevator alignment and gaps. Much head-scratching. That night the shop owner remembered a similar bug from years ago, single-digit serial number. Came and went in the air, didn't repro on the ground, they chased it for weeks. This time he came into the shop and told them to check if the vent holes in the horizontal stabilizer had gotten plugged up during the build. Sure enough, that was it. A rapid climb caused it to swell and rub, which would go away as the captured air leaked away, then reappear with the next climb. Cleaned the holes and it worked great on the second flight. Dodged a bullet on that one, payoff for working with an experienced shop.

All of those were fixed in time for the second flight, the next day. The inner gear doors are also flexing open a bit in flight, that'll take a little longer to address. It's really becoming apparent that it's a lot quicker to fix bugs in software than in hydraulic, electrical, or mechanical systems. And before you pipe up no, there's no evidence that bugs are any more likely in software than other systems.

You guys gave me a hard time for focusing too much on details but the reality is, it's ALL details. You plant trees one after the other until you have a forest.

You can never have too many vent holes on your control surfaces!

Bravo and congratulations Dave. Look forward to seeing more of it

Congrats! I can't imagine how you must feel after all that sweat equity to see it flying overhead and with just that small squawk list.

I may have missed it, but who was your test pilot? Also named Dave?

You can tell who was in the heated cockpit and who was standing outside in the cold wind!

It's a darn good thing you found that before climbing to the flight levels.

On my first flight, my ASI was reading 10 Kts low so, on the landing, I floated 4,000' down the runway before touching down. LOL! The problem was the static ports, but I fixed that by installing dams in front of the ports. Your test pilot did good!

I'm glad you're plane is finally flying. You should be proud (as I'm sure you are). So are you going to the LOBO Landing in Vegas?

Edit: When my Lancair 235 was just out of phase 1 with 75 hrs. TT, I flew it to the LOBO landing in Denver. (Gutsy move with only 75 hrs. total time, no?) From Denver, I continued to Oregon, Los Angeles, Tucson, Texas, Mississippi, and back home to Asheville. It was a shakedown cruise

He did a circle while looking at the GPS groundspeed to calibrate the ASI. Not his first rodeo.
