Some of you may have seen my thread complaining the Cessna 120 was too slow for me. I ended up getting the opportunity to fly an RV and I was sold. Yesterday I closed on a -4, basic VFR no gyro panel and a wood prop on a 150 horse Lycoming.

It’s quite the upgrade....

RV-4s are HOT. They can keep up with my Lancair AND do aerobatics as well.

150hp wood-prop RV-4. It became my favorite homebuilt at my first Oshkosh and has stayed at the top of the list ever since.

Congratulations!

If I thought the wife would be able to get in and out and be comfortable in an RV, I'd be all about getting one. The Citabria is fun to fly, but just isn't a travelling machine.

Fortunately I have access to a Comanche when I need to get somewhere.

That's a very pretty airplane! I've always thought the RV-4 was one of the best-looking planes around – certainly in my "top 5" list. I pretty much fell in love with it at first sight. Somehow, the proportions and the "chipmunk-cheek" cowl just seem "right" to me. Unfortunately, I just don't fit in the plane comfortably. (And fugettabout trying to get in the back...)

Hope you enjoy your new hotrod! She's a beauty!

PS - I'm at the other end of the spectrum these days... Low and slow is a lot more fun for me, now that I've got no place to be – at least no schedule that says when I've gotta be there.

It's my favorite RV. Flew in my first one off the 'Sunset Strip', a grass strip in North Plains, OR, with none other than Dick VanGrunsven himself, in 1984. Threatened to build one my whole life. Never able to make time. Hope to address that in retirement in a few years. What a great little plane. Does everything well... except provide extra room. You can still get the kit! Just doesn't come in quick build. Yours is very fetching. Know you'll enjoy it! Few people land and walk off from one of those RV-4's without wearing a smile. ~ Mark

RV-4's are making a comeback. Wished I had mine; finished in '88 with an O-360 and kept it 20 yrs. They make for great formation flying. For the first 5 years flew all over the US with nothing more than a line and heading on a map.

Wife thinks it makes my head look big.

They make EVERYONE'S head look Big! Cuz it's mashed right up against the glass. No one complains of having too much room in these. Your head should be BIG, that's a fine '4' you built and flew all over. Simple and to the point... what it's made for! You say they're making a comeback?? How so? Getting more orders now? That would be good! ~ ME

I actually have more elbow room in the -4 than I did in the 120.
