As much fun as the Citabria has been there are times I want to land...right there in THAT cut field. Plus my good friend has 400 feet of landing room next to his barn in Pa. Zenith...ok but kinda U...gly Husky Just and my favorite so far with very little research is the Carbon Cub I need SLOW stall speed- (Captain obvious) decent useful load, great handling and would not like to give up too much high cruise speed in comparison to my Aerostar Which one and why oh, I am not going to be building me own..."A man's got to know his limitations"..C. Budget? I vote for the carbon cub. For being a factory built plane I think it's awesome. There are definitely some awesome ones you can build yourself but that is a different experience. I've always wanted a Carbon Cub with a Citabria being a close second when it comes to taildraggers. I'm lying, a 180 would also be really cool. This is why I have 3 air planes at the moment.

you can spend the price of a house on these hopped-up new sort-of-cubs with 360 engine and constant speed prop, and get something that performs just marginally better than a basic, lightweight PA-11 (or clone) with a C-85. There is a lot to be said for simplicity.

Depends on what you want to spend. If you want to keep it cheap, I'd do a Piper Pacer. They can be bought cheap easily for under 30k. Cruise isn't bad, and you take out the back 2 seats and you have a decent plane that you can take whatever you want and haul it all over the place.
If you're willing to spend money, then a cessna 180 with the io550 powerplant and an MT 3 blade. That in my opinion will be way better than a carbon cub.

My friend just bought a Rans S7. I bought him out of our Stearman partnership so he could get a STOL airplane. The plane he bought is a factory built model. I flown with him a few times and I liked flying it. I wouldn't trade my bird dog for one, it's too small. There's room for two and not much else. According to the factory, it will work with 400' but there's not much margin. https://www.rans.com/s-7-courier-specsperformanceUsername Protected wrote: As much fun as the Citabria has been there are times I want to land...right there in THAT cut field. Depends on you mission. If you just want to pop around locally and land on short strips a Cub is nice and simple. Some are pretty expensive for what you get. If you don’t mind flying really slow in cruise and want to land REALLY short, the Just would fit nicely. If the Cirrus that’s leaving is your only plane and this future plane replaces it but can land STOL, I’d look at 180/185 so you can still travel and fit 3 or 4, or if you only need room for two and you want to travel AND still land pretty darn short, a Husky. I have access to a 4 seat Cessna in our flying club and I use the Mits for work and long range travel so for me, the answer was an A-1 Husky...not so expensive that I’m afraid to get it dirty, reasonably fast with a 180hp engine and constant speed prop, fit it with pod for camping/hunting, different gear and 31” tires in summer or skis in winter. It has been a good choice for me. No matter which you choose, you will have lots of fun!

Looks like you have a winner Doug. I kinda like blue. There is a 3000 foot x 100 sweet grass field 2 miles from my friends farm. I could drop off passenger and gear, change pitch on prop then head to pasture for short landing AFTER I get proficient. A few questions Is the rear seat a single or small double seat? Also the speeds you gave in video were mph or knots?....mph I hope on the low end and knots on high end What Engine...fuel burn...how big is gas tank? Cessna-Cub would leave a little dough fer me panel upgrade on Aerostar

Nicer options:
1) Carbon Cub
2) Husky
3) Xcub (gets you your cruise speed)
Overrated: The 170/180
Overpriced: The 185 Any kitfox flying
Underpowered enough to be potentially problematic: The 120/140 The <150hp pacers like the 135horse stock ones.
Really damned cool: The Helio Courier
-J Not a bad summary,, though I’d add The Supercub to “Overpriced” and copy Carbon Cub there, too. But now Brad’s saying he wants reliable sub-200’ landings. If there are any significant obstructions, nothing on this list will do that unless completely empty and flown by a Bobby Breeden clone. To do that reliably and safely (though not quietly), Daryl has given the definitive answer.
