Joe

Connect air compressor hose to big end.

Connect high pressure hose to aircraft strut.

Slide collar (blue on this one) on big end back and forth to pump high pressure into strut.

So you would be pumping air instead of nitrogen into strut.

It would help in a bind when not having a nitrogen tank. OK.

Well, ~80% of what your pumping would be N2 at least. :D

Does anyone know first or even second hand of a case where using shop air created a freezing problem for a strut in the piston GA operating environment?

Sold.

And there is also still oil sloshing around in the strut.

Nope, been using shop air in the flight school aircraft struts & propeller hubs, some since 2003 - no corrosion, no freezing.

Hi Steve!

That's exactly what I've noticed as well. The physical amount of water potentially contained in the gas inside a GA strut is trivial, or less.

Hey Guys,

I've recently acquired one of these Aircraft Tool Supply pumps and I cannot get it to work.

I've got it hooked up to my compressor at 100 PSI. It continually leaks low pressure air through it. Actuating the slide does make the internal cylinder move, but the air coming out is nowhere near what is required. There is a LOT of air coming out on the back stroke.

I did set it up per the instructions, but nothing I can do will make it work, and it certainly won't pump up a strut.

To be fair, the compressed air it is attached to is a little compressor with a "pony" tank, but it is set to 100 PSI and it should do more than leak air.

Is there anything I should check before trying a warranty claim on it? Anyone have any luck with dealing with ATS?

Best,
Rich

Is yours a used or new pump?

The strut end connection has to be on very tight or the low volume of high pressure air will leak out. When you slide the "trigger" back it is normal for a lot of air that was used on the compression stroke to vent. There is a large difference in piston size between the low pressure end and the high pressure outlet, thus the exit air is much less than what is used to stroke the mechanism and the steam engine sound thus produced.
