I got to fly the Gamebird!

This thing makes an Extra seem like a Suburban.

IO-580. 200kts X/C. Something like 90 gallons of fuel. As comfortable as a Lazyboy. Certified. G3x and he's working on a Garmin autopilot.

He did a loop from 100kts with a 4 or avalanche on top. It has incredible aerodynamic centering with very light breakout force. Very linear control responses. Blinding roll rate, and you can pull it into a full stall buffet and move the rudder and ailerons full deflection without a departure.

All that and it 3 points like a Cub... (A Cub with power steering.)

All I can say is Wow!

Phillip Steinbach designed it and he is a magician.

I love the cross-country ability, so airshow and competition pilots can get to the show without stopping every hour to fill up a small gas tank.

Gamebird is built in Northwest Arkansas, if I recall correctly. Looks like fun!

Flown an Extra300 one time - so making that look like a Suburban is pretty wild! I like the look of that plane too - very cool!

90 gallons of gas? That's pretty incredible.

I saw the Oshkosh stream when they first demoed it and the routine was absolutely insane. It was maneuvering like R/C planes do.

All carbon fiber, right?

I know nothing about aerobatics but know that thing moved some boundaries in a big way. The first time I saw it perform at Oshkosh a few years ago I was amazed at the things it was doing, mostly on the slower speed end. Like nothing I'd seen before.

I even like the color! It matches my vintage Kawasaki motocross bikes!

Oooh I would love to try one of these. It would probably feel like cheating in competition compared with the Pitts.

Doug: Amazing how negative G's make you smile beatifically.

Impressive that the brilliant constructor was able to (in this FAA burocratic sh...t show), get the airplane certified, while the Extra has to put up with Ex-Ex. Great that it is made in the USA, and will certainly put the fear of god into the German ranks, just like they did to the American Pitts forces years ago.

You didn't mention the price, but I guess the same Suburban allusion fits: It's like a Fiat 500 (tube and rag), versus a Ferrari (G-bird).

Us common folk will just have to continue smashing around the box in our wood and fabric Specials. We may fly a reasonably good advanced for 30 min, then, bingo on fuel, we think:
"Jeez, now I gotta go and land this thing".

I will be looking forward to how this beauty will fare.

That round-motored beauty in the background still outclasses everything. Period.

Best,

TN

It has room for a weekend bag in addition to the fuel.

The factory is on my local field VBT (Bentonville) and we get to watch their demo flights, training flights and formation work. I even got a pre-certification factory tour, they are doing it right.

@Doug - That is a neat looking little Howard 6 in the background! Are you flying that as well this trip? Did he rebuild it or reproduce it?

It's actually not that expensive (as new airplanes go)

Still about 10x my pre-furlough budget, but :bugeye:

Yes, mfg'd under license.

It's a bit of a mutt. First certified in Yurrup. Designed in Britain, by a German. Engineered by a German & Chinese(?).
