The video ends with it saying it is still the world’s quietest helicopter.
Not sure of the date of the video but I’m guessing that secret Blackhawk used during the Bin Laden raid now owns that title!

I read this years ago and was pleased to see it's been declassified. CIA developed some helos for recon and extracting assets from behind the iron curtain in the early 70s. They not only needed to be quiet but needed FLIR to fly lights out given the lack of useful NVGs then and that was heavy stuff so it required more power and the logical engineering train got underway.  The story is "skunk works" levels of interesting. This article goes into the incredibly precise engineering required and I thought the maintenance results of them getting to pick and choose engines and transmissions that weren't just within limits but as close to perfect as possible were very interesting. https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom ... 122561.pdf

good read. only part way through and a lot of good stuff in there. I got to fly a 500 E model quite a bit and always wondered why they switched from the 4 blade to the 5 blade set up. It sounds like a lot of present day “stuff” was garnered from that project. Very productive in a short period of time.
