Boy did you make the right call on that one. That's really scary. I wonder if there was a prop strike.

Yep. Two big cracks in the crank, one behind the main bearing and one behind the prop. I was just about to lose the prop or experience a rapid unplanned disassembly of my 220 Continental. Pete figures I was inside of 15 minutes from this happening. Had a long sobering talk with Gunny Perdue...his quote will stick with me. “When these things talk to you...you HAVE to listen!”

Glad I pulled it off and retired it. Looking forward to being in the air with the new rig soon.

You’d wonder. The engine only had about 150 hours on it since a mid-90’s overhaul by a now-defunct (but generally well regarded, so I hear) shop out in California. It sat a lot in a ‘flying museum’ out in the Pacific Northwest. Then I got it and started flying it and most of those hours (100+) are either me or the ferry to Texas. Had it torn down and looked at in 2018, including new seals all around and installed the roller bearing STC. No discrepancies noted on the crank at that point. Replaced the cam and lifters (which had some spalling due to sitting so much).

Now, 50 hours or so later, this.

Only real operational difference is that my McCauley prop flunked the 100 hour AD when the motor was off and I replaced it with another metal prop, a Ham Standard ground adjustable.

So either the prop induced some vibration that cracked the crank or maybe there were errors in assembly that led to that? Or they missed the cracks when they tore it down? Or...? We will probably never know what happened.

The Stearman we just bought sat for a long time, about 12 years, before I flew it. The engine is low time, about 150 hours SMOH, and it has the roller bearing mod. I'm wondering if we should get the prop removed and at least get that portion of the crank inspected.

My old stearman had the same engine, W670, but the McCauley prop. This one has the Sensinich wood prop. I think the performance with the McCauley was a lot better in both cruise and climb.

Getting ready for the maiden flight of 2020. The airport was deserted so lunch at the hangar was a solitary event. You can't fly a dirty biplane you know...

Didn't fly today, gusty high direct crosswinds. I'm going to wait til tomorrow afternoon. But, I'm ready!

Here's a thought experiment: the Waco cockpits are about 3 feet apart. Too close for "social distancing". But, if I started the engine, and a passenger wore gloves and then boarded and deplaned while the engine was still running could we maintain safe breathing and avoid touching the same surfaces? I think we could.

In NJ we are in the epicenter of the outbreak probably a result of the dense population. They have clarified social distancing and want us to be six feet away when being in proximity to another person is essential- like the food store, pharmacy and doctors office. Otherwise there should be no 6’ “socializing”. Have I been closer, yes. But as this gets worse I am staying further and further away and having less contact with people.
I did my recurrent in the plane about ten days ago. I would not get in the plane with another person today. You guys are a few weeks behind us.

Great! Nice gentle crosswind today. Light traffic at the airport so they let me use the big runway (just in case!) but didn't need it. For our airport there were quite a few airplanes out. The flying club had 3 our of their 4 which is highly unusual.

I did a few nice wheelies. Nice to be able to land well after 6 months off. Air work was acceptable.

I put the front cockpit cover on and even though it was in the 60's it was pretty toasty in the back. Still, it's like a drug. I'm going back as soon as the weather clears again.

Too nice of weather in Tennessee not to go up and practice some social distancing.

Got the Stearman back from the shop with the new Jake and 2B-20 installed. Sure is pretty! Performance is pretty amazing, compared with the old Continental 220. Hops off the ground (kind of a STOL-Stearman...ha). And another 7-10 mph in cruise. Not much vibration (as these things go...it was about the same as the Continental on a good day), but more noise since the wind going by your ears is a few mph faster. No leaks (other than the prop flinging the overhaul grease everywhere on the initial run-up and test flights. It needs a good wipe down, but otherwise none the worse for wear. Happy to have it home.

That's great news CK. Best of luck with the new setup.

Got to fly the Waco this morning. A thunderstorm just passed over the airport as I was arriving. By the time I got the plane out and taxied to the runway the air was basically still and cool. mixed thin layers of clouds to the west and deep blue storm clouds to the north. No one out flying so I had the pattern and later the practice area all to myself. What a beautiful morning and fabulous way to start the day!

A bunch of us Dallas Stearman guys got together for a hamburger out at Propwash yesterday. We had eleven of us show up. Hot, but an otherwise nice day for biplane flying.

You guys made me watch Kermit Weeks Waco journey home. Nice Stearmans there, glad the new engine roars!
