What physical damage coverage did you price out? The reason I ask is that the only way piston rotor non-owned insurance is going to be $7500 is if you buy the max hull coverage - which I think is $200k and also the max liability - in that case yes the annual premium for that policy comes out around $7500. Generally non-owned policies aren't purchased to cover the entire asset value in the event of a loss - I would think whatever the rotors in motion deductible the flight school has would be sufficient and any requirements to cover above that on a non-owned policy would be defined within the rental agreement. CV Starr has probably the best rotor non-owned policy that i'm aware of so those numbers above are from their coverage offerings.

I will have to look at my quote but pretty sure I asked for $150,000 which would be the full value of this 300. I had both of my fixed wing brokers quote it and the $7,300ish?? Quote was the lowest with the worst coverages/limits etc. This 300 is owned by the instructor ........ registered in his corporation. He said if I had an accident solo that I would have to cover the $12,000 deductible. That deal is only available to students that he solo’d. I don’t know if covering the deductible was his rule or the insurance company’s but either way I figure that after the insurance company pays him, they would come after me for the balance. He was supposed to clarify how it works and I believe that fell thru the cracks.

Hi Tony- If you quoted $150k physical damage and $1m limited to $100k each passenger liability premium should have come in slightly less than $5k per year. Again CV Starr has about the best non-owned policy for piston rotorcraft. Not sure what the other brokers you noted were looking at but pricing should have been no where near $7500.

Thanks Tom. I watched some of these Mosquito videos the other week and that got me to wondering if I needed to go take another lesson. Maybe if I hold off, it (that thought) will go away. Even using $5,000 plus $300 hour at not so many hours a year doesn’t seem to make very good economic sense ..... kinda like owning two airplanes.

This is just my thought. I own a r22 that I use in my business quiet a bit, it has been very reliable and predictable in maintenance and performance. I usually fly alone so performance is good. I am in the ag. business, so I really can get a lot of use from it and I depend on it. I have enough things to tend to that are mechanical in nature and I was looking for safety and something that would go 100 hrs. without maint. other than oil change. If you want a machine to fly occasionally for fun I think some of these home builts may be fine I just don’t know how long you can Go without some kind of tweeking or adjustments. I think 4 cycle would be more reliable and I understand some of these fly very well. Nothing like the freedom of a helicopter. RAWL
